Title: Baked Alaska / Arctic roll
Post by: little blue on November 01, 2013, 10:10:35 pm
Anybody got a simple (very simple!) recipe with complete idiot-guide instructions for
Baked Alaska and
Arctic Roll ?

I want to make some kind of combo with my class at school to represent the "layers" of the Earth, think inner & outer core, liquidy mantle and crust.

I'm the one that needs idiot's guide - I don't have the culinary expertise to carry it off without some help!!!

thanks in advance

My Grandfather owned an Ice cream manufacturing company.

Make sponge before hand and place on ovenproof dish

Make meringue just before hand too

Place ice cream on top of sponge

Ice cream is better to be hard.

spread jam over ice cream

Cover whole thing with meringue and put in a hot oven.(220C) for 10 minutes or until a deep golden brown

Thanks Annie.

need to check if the school has pudding bowls - need it to be half-spherical so the kids can join them up to make an "Earth" ....
and perfect my meringue technique, which is rubbish!

I can see a problem there - never seen a spherical one - needs to have a flat base to sit on. ???

two half - spheres in pudding basins, held loosely together to show the sphere
seen a recipe online somewhere like this

If it doesn't look right, the kids won't be convinced by it,  it'll be bad enough having ice cream in it when it should be hot!

Still can't figure this out - so do you make two puddings then just sit them together?  They'd still need a flat base to sit on the baking tray then on the serving plate. I'm intrigued by the idea  :eyelashes:

yep ... but one will have a flatter side and should sit in a bowl ok.
It won't be for long - before the boys will eat it!!

Right - here'e another target for you   :innocent:  Play with the meringue so when it cooks you get rough shapes of the continents!  :roflanim: :excited:

Remember you can make the bomb ahead of time and freeze it, then just bake straight from the freezer.
