Title: Hello and help!!
Post by: misscbr on October 28, 2013, 08:45:09 pm
Hi,
Hope someone can help me out here. I have now added 4 pigs to my wee small holding but am sooooo confused about how much to feed them!!! I have 2 Berkshire x old spot weighing in at around 50kg and 2 Kune Kune at around 28kg all 4 will be for the freezer and are about 10-12weeks old. I have read it goes on age as to how much you feed them but does this go for the different breeds as my 2 sets of boys are the same age but certainly weigh in at different weights. Please help I don't want fat pigs!!

I don't know much about pigs but wanted to welcome you to the forum.

Hello and welcome

The "norm" is 1lb of feed per months of age per day - so a 2 month old pig would get 2lb of feed a day, split into at least two feeds. This rises to a maximum of 6lb per day BUT with these traditional breeds, some folk cap at 5lb.

Also if you are feeding veg or fruit, cut back the pig feed at a ratio of 4:1, so if you feed 4lb of fruit / veg, reduce the pig feed by 1lb.

Also chek their condition by feeling for the spine - if you can feel it easily with little or no pressure, the pig is thin; if you can feel it with firm pressure, the pig is fine; if you can't feel it at all, the pig is too fat.

We've always worked on this but there are others on here with more extensive experience than I  :)

Thanks you for that - but just wondering would you still feed pigs of a different weight at the same age? My BK/GOS are a lot bigger than the 2 Kune Kune but both the same age Hmmmmm.....confused lol admittedly it doesn't take much!!
