Title: why would you buy this?
Post by: Fleecewife on October 14, 2013, 08:04:39 pm

I genuinely don't understand why anyone would pay nearly £800 for this:

For a start it's ugly, but how would anyone even have that much to spend on something to carry their junk around in  ???

Okay okay, I know I have never been accused of being a fashion victim, but I'm truly lost in the psychology of this handbag craze.

Does anyone understand it?

I'll probably be threatened with suing again for writing this  ;D

It's a multi tasking thing for ladies .
Not only can you carry half the house about in it just incase you might need something you can feed and water all the animals out of it as well   .
think of how it would look hung from a horses head or the horns of a cow that's using it as a nose bag  :roflanim:

Seriously , in truth  I suppose for those whom money is no object it is a statement of their freedom to spend money how they see fit and stuff the rest of you .

I don't understand the fascination for handbags either and I'm a lady! Well female anyway. I just stuff all my junk in pockets or if I'm dolled up (last time circa 1996) stuff it all in hubbys pockets.

The programme we watched about porn brokers focused on expensive bags, they appear to fetch more than anything, my assortment of bags  must total well over £20  :innocent:

:roflanim: :roflanim: Sorry..think you're meaning pawn brokers but porn brokers aka pimps are one of the classes of people that can afford stuff like that.  I don't get handbag thing either, when I was a lot younger and knew nothing I thought those that 'did lunch' had a great life but they are actually bored housewives with empty lives..unlike mine, covered in muck but fulfilled! :excited:

I do use a handbag - well shoulder bag - but my latest one cost £4.99 in the sales. We could live for a month including the mortgage on not much more than that cost. Ridiculous.

Horses for courses!  i quite like the look of it to be honest, exceptfor the label printed on it, but the label is what most people who buy this stuff are looking for.  It's not for everybody, but good luck to them - somebody must be able to afford them otherwise they wouldn't get made.

Yep I am, no was, a handbag person. I probably still have about 40 of them but mostly they don't get used these days.

I always had a different bag to match shoes but it doesn't seem so important to have a bag that matches my wellies  :roflanim:

I only once bought an expensive bag though, £125 and thought I was mad doing that

:hohoho: :hohoho: :hohoho:  There's no icon to show my jaw dropped to the floor at those prices.  As for the clear one, I could get a see-through carrier bag if I wanted everyone to see what I cart about, and that wouldn't cost me anything  :sunshine: .   I could buy a nice big flock of top of the range sheep for the price of some of those bags. Or get my house reroofed.

Bionic - I don't think I've even got 40 pairs of knickers.   I'm clearly missing the point somewhere, but at least yours are not those OTT prices.

I used to carry a handbag to cart what seemed then to be 'essential' paraphernalia about with me - phone, diary, purse, comb, keys, etc, and no doubt a dozen other things that weren't at all essential but I carried because I had the space for them.

I did once spend over £100 on a very beautiful leather briefcase.  It came apart within a couple of months, and I bought a more durable one for half the price.  (It was bad enough I had to carry papers and laptops about with me, at least I could have them be in something I enjoyed looking at and handling.)

Then I 'opted out' and switched the handbags for bum bags, which I still prefer - not least because you haven't room to carry anything other than the essentials!

However, now that I knit  :knit:, there's no room in the bum bag for a knitting project, so as I have to carry a knitting project bag anyway  :innocent:  :knit:, I have a project-plus shoulder-bag, which can hold my purse, a comb, a nailfile (never essential in my old life, but essential now as a knitter!), etc, as well as the current small knitting project (usually socks to be small and portable.)

If I'm not packing a knitting project, then phone, car key and cash are in my jeans pockets, and I don't need anything else.

Except, that is, if I may be meeting spinners :spin:, then there could be a spinning wheel in her carry bag over one shouder...  :innocent:

I carry all that stuff, plus a bottle of water, in a back pack - which leaves my hands free to spin or knit, but my backpack only cost a few quid, not hundreds, or even thousands.

Every now and then I tip my back pack upside down just to see why it's so heavy - what a lot of unnecessary stuff I've been humphing around  ::)

Just think of how much sheep feed you could get for the cost of one of those bags...or the breeding stock you could buy!

I love handbags and shoes got lots of them but i have to save for what i want and chose it carefully to match an outfit. But i am a self confessed handbagaholic.
Saying that i wouldn't spend that sort of money on one. Rather go and buy some more sheep! at least they would earn their keep

Some people live in a different world to most of us, I once did a job in bishops gate London, the lady of the house was having a £35k cooker installed, never to be used, as they bought their food in from a restaurant, it was just a talking point amongst friends

we laid the floor at a cost of £5K, the lady didn't like the colour so we replaced it at another £5k, she wrote the cheque out for £10k without batting a eyelid , when asked what to do with the flooring we took up..she told us to get rid of it...my kitchen didn't half look posh  :innocent:

her Hubby pulled up in a aston martin DB9 it was a different world to the one i know

i would imagine £795 for a handbag would be the norm to these people

We always translate money into how many sheep hurdles you could buy (never seem to have enough of them).  If we spent that much we just might.

You have all just reminded me of my great freebie, I have a ruck sack that is a stool as well, its very comfy even for my fat bum...my daughter laughed as she had visions of me walking the dogs with a stool on my  back...it also has a padded tin foil  bit for hot or cold food, load of room for dog treat, leads, bags for foraging and foraged stuff.....then the phone, glasses, camera, scissors, first aid.....I did buy a bag for £2 that I sold for a good profit on E Bay, I think £16-£20 I put it on here at the time,.....I use a bag when I go out but prefer big pockets

Warning, another story!! My friend, an animal lover always wore full make up to go out with her horse etc, she had various rescue dogs and one morning, I went to baby sit her 2 small boys and was greeted buy her elderly cocker spaniel, with a shoe in its mouth, the spaniel dropped the shoe down some roadwork's outside, never to be seen again, my friend then told me just how expensive they were...we both did see the funny side and her husband paid too!
I did used to buy matching shoes, handbags, jewels and scarfs and hope to return to that trend very soon........

Sad to say I've only owned/bought 1 handbag my whole life - I thought it was rather smart black leather but never really had the occasion's to use it as I use my pockets or backpack - guess it must be over 30 years old ans immaculate, would it be classed as vintage now?

That's not sad Brucklay - that's sensible  ;D   I had a handbag once - red leather which I loved.   I came off a motorbike whilst carrying it and the leather was horribly scraped and worn away - I mourn it still  :'(

Then I had a big bag which hardly fits the description of handbag, when my children were small.   Everything bar the pottie fitted in there  :roflanim:

I can fit the exact same amount into a small bag as I can my big one, also, I can never find things in the big bag but can in the small one, its magic.......If travelling there is the functionality test, has to fit I pad, phone, make up, hairspray, brush, spare pants, deodorant or perfume, umbrella, purse, tickets if its the train and hopefully some food and drink, either a small flask or small bottle of water...and it must rest nicely on my shoulder and be fully zipped up to avoid loss of embarrassing spillage, I have followed my teenage daughter walking down the isle of a train dispensing Tampons from her unfastened ruck sack!!
