Hi, I'm looking for decent photos of an alder and I'm not sure if either of these pictures is, or if they're even the same tree, they're on my phone next to each other so were the same day.. :dunce:
Hazel and alder seem a little similar in illustrations but one book said alder has a flatter top so I was thinking this might be flattish.. ???

The pics are of different trees, I think. The second pic has rounded leaves, while in the first pic the leaves have a swoopy point to them.
I usually differentiate by the fruits.
I found this pic (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=alder&hl=en-GB&rlz=1T4SVEC_enGB399GB399&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=UdJNUuiIMsnM0QWN_YCYBQ&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=566&dpr=1#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=H4ITIpeXBeSf0M%3A%3BitAN70_4EwXawM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252F2.bp.blogspot.com%252F-6jk-yYnOCmg%252FUAZG2xDji0I%252FAAAAAAAAApw%252FQNRpmqrQGR0%252Fs640%252Falder-leaves-and-cones-207-0749.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ftreesplantsflowers.blogspot.com%252F2012_07_01_archive.html%3B1233%3B874) which I'd say is alder; the leaves do look like your second pic, I'd say.

First pic is Hazel. The pronounced "drip tip" is the givaway on a roundish, double toothed leaf.
Second pic is a little less clear. It might also be Hazel.
Alder does indeed have leaves that look like the ends have been cut off

I have a Hazel tree but dare not comment before BUT the top picture does look like my tree....no nuts as yet but mine did say Hazel on the lable

They both look like Hazel to me , Alder has a longer stalk to the leaf and a smooth skin , Hazel has a short stalk and dimpled skin with drip tip and is usually a lighter colour than Alder
