Title: Wanted - old caravan/shed/hut as field shelter for goats
Post by: fsmnutter on September 29, 2013, 04:38:49 pm
As stated in the title, we are looking for a field shelter for our goats.
At the minute, they have a barn, and get out to the field, but as the inclement weather comes, I would like to have a field shelter for any sudden downpours if we're not able to get them in.
Any rundown caravans, garden sheds, garages, etc, that we could dismantle easily and take away would be just ideal.
Please let us know if you know of anything suitable, or we're going to have to get the drawing board out to make plans to build something!
Thanks
Suz and Den

We have goats, it's a faff everytime there was a (heavy) shower I had to run out, open gate, move electric fence, bring them across behind house, round far side of barn, 5 mins later it would be warm and sunny again.
We got 4 chunky (6ft?)fence posts, 2 x 2mtre sheets of metal profile sheeting (left over from barn) for the roof, OH made a frame so the top would be safe if heavy now piled on it.
Dug holes+knocked the four corner posts in + compacted stone+soil in for stability, fastened the frame on, then the sheets to the frame, so it looks like a huge table, slightly sloping for run-off.
The goats love it, too sunny, showers, no problem there they are laid under the shelter. (it is also near a hedge for shelter from the wind.
(OH said they'd never get the idea to go under, I felt really smug when they'd 'got it' within a week  ;D )

Would one of those fibreglass or plastic calf shelters/house be any good - at least you could move it about.

Have you got access to wooden pallets? We made a horse shed out of the large ones. Plus a bit of ply and tin, and the house is ready!  :)

I have a ''70's retro' caravan you can have but it'll be transporting it that will be a pain, it needs tyres..I bought it a playhouse for the kids but one of them decided to break a window and rooflight is also broken but these could easily be sorted for animals..would be lovely done up..by someone else!  :roflanim:

Try your local freecycle - www.freecycle.org.uk (http://www.freecycle.org.uk) (I think that's it)- if you don't know it, it's a site to stop so much landfill where people give away stuff they don't need (or you could swap something)  - someone may have an old kids play house or a shed they could give you for free.

Or perhaps visit your local council tipping yard, it's heartbreaking to see what people throw away  ::)

As another poster has mentioned, if you build a tin shelter affair, do it next to a hedge to help keep the cold winds at bay.
