Title: kilner bottles-what to put in them..
Post by: lord flynn on September 24, 2013, 10:41:39 am
I have 2 x 250ml kilner bottles. I was going to make rosehip syrup for xmas presents, but having made a huge batch of rosehip jelly at the weekend, I am bored of picking and chopping.

what else can I put in them that will last until the holidays? One is for a non-cook, so flavoured oil etc will be wasted.

TIA :)

Any fruit? I'm doing raspberry vodka, raspberry brandy and fig brandy at the moment - as well as damson gin (and due to go sloe hunting - we had our own hedge flailed so none of our own this year). The principle should work for any soft fruit combined with sugar and strong spirits. Just take your pick!

Or, yes, any chutney, jam or pickle - just more hassle.

Blackberry vodka is lovely.  Or raspberry.  I gave some away as presents a few years ago and now I get requests for it!  If you shake it a bit more often the flavour imparts quicker!  the plum vodka I put in 3 weeks ago is ready to drink now.

Last year I made Cranberry Vodka and brought it to our family get together and they have requested more for next year. It only took 3 or 4 weeks to make as far as I know. Has a nice christmassy feel to it as well thanks to the cranberries. I wouldn't think it is too late to make fruit vodkas. Although as mentioned I did shake/stir the fruit daily. I can dig out the recipe if you are interested

I guess the longer you leave it, the better the taste but you've still got nearly three months so I'm sure blackberry vodka will be delicious by Xmas.

If you want it specifically for Christmas you could make Mince Pie vodka!  i made some last year - lovely to serve with christmas pudding,or even with mince pies!
