Title: Home made dog food ideas please
Post by: happygolucky on September 23, 2013, 11:38:04 am
After reading so many people cooking for their dogs, I am thinking about cooking some stuff myself, so, anyone got some good stuff to share please?
I use carrots a lot and also now cut apples up as I am not so sure about pips, funnily our dogs refused the cookers I got given by an aunty......but they love sweeter eating apples and of course fruit that we collect.
Any recipes welcome thanks

apple pips have cyanide in them but they could possibly "pass through" a dog whole.
we used to feed whole rabbits, whole chickens, old sheep, and bits of the pig we didnt want. it did wear down their teethe bit but they were fine and healthy.
id definitely add CLO capsules, my labrador is glowing after starting on them last month. his coat is so shiny and hes bouncy along. being a labrador - he just eats it like a treat. look on ebay for them.

we used to cook tuna treats for dog training, was like a tuna brownie. the trainers gave us the recipe and my gsd loved them. quite time consuming and messy to make though.

You are good at your bargains, Sandy - look for  near end date liver/heart/other meats in the supermarket.  If you are looking to save money on dog food cook it all up and mix with cheap terrier biscuits.

Or your freezer could break down and ruin all the food and your insurance company could reimburse you then you'd have all that stuff to cook up and feed the dogs. ;)

Our freezer was raided once - the Police brought all our partially defrosted food back and we had enough to feed the dogs for months after cooking and refreezing

Ha ahaha..good idea Anne...the next house had an American fridge freezer so has that type of gap in the fitted kitchen and its a nice kitchen so we will buy one eventually, in the mean time we are currently eating our way through the many frozen bargains that lurk at the bottom of the 2 chest freezers we have..they are going in store until we get a shed, we may get one put up before we move as the house is empty........I am not fond of beef stew steak.....and we have loads of it....I much prefer chicken or fish......the dogs and the chickens may get a few treats soonish :innocent:

We buy reduced meat or chicken at the supermarket, cook and freeze. they get veg added as I always cook a little extra when cooking for ourselves. It works out cheaper when done in mass. Sometimes they get fish. If we are shopping in the evening we can pick up fish for as little as 10p.

I go for cheap supermarket deals too, and the butcher gives me whole cow hearts for very little money.
But I feed that raw, not cooked (plus some bone & liver) and I add fish oil too.
