Title: Wild foord and foraging

I would be interested in sharing tips and ideas on foraging.  If you are into this, what are you looking for right now ?

We have been doing this for a few years now. My bible is ' wild food ' by Roger Phillips.

Hi Kevkev,

At the mo we have a freezer full of cherry plums in various colours for jam, chutney and plum sauce. Going after rowan berries next. Already had cherries and raspberries. Coming up blackberries and eater, cooker and crab apples for jellies, jams, chutney and pies. Then sloes for gin. Damsons if I can find any for jam. Then hazel nuts and walnuts.

We walk the dogs everyday and make notes of where various trees and bushes are in the hedgerows. We try to go mid week after work to avoid weekend foragers and hopefully get the jump on others.

I also forage for foliage and berries, hips and haws and twigs for autumn wreaths and candle holders and also our Christmas wreaths and swags.

On hols pick mussels and when I used to scuba dive a lot always brought up scallops, flat fish, lobsters, crabs etc. Got my eye on Food from the Seashore next.

Not very inventive or exciting I'm afraid, just what we happen across when out and about. Get a few strange looks sometimes with our assortment of bags and receptacles.

Sounds good. I tend to go out mid week as well. Nuts and berries feature big time with us. Jam, drinks etc.  The forests are full of things to survive, its just a question of opening your eyes and mind.

Alas we are far from the sea !

I hunt and fish and whatever I get eventually makes it to the table.

I go forraging with my dog's, I have a freezer with loads of WIld Garlic, Brambles from last year and still a few Raspberries fro last year ad this. Just finnished with the Bilberries. I alo collect food for the chickens and ducks and not enough time for collecting more for us to eat..have to do some work!!! Only trouble is the flies

what you do with the flies to catch then sandy lol

i woundn't think you could get much of a meal out of them.
