Title: Hubbard Question
Post by: sokel on September 11, 2013, 08:43:29 pm
As you know we got 50 Hubbards a couple of weeks ago, They are doing great and growing like weeds  Now that they are nearly feathered up we have noticed that we have 3 Brown ones   :-\ Any ideas ?  all of the others are white and the whites are slightly bigger than the brown 3

i have seen several people with hubbards with either an odd brown one or even patchy brown white ones, i guess its some throwback to the original crosses that make up the hubbards...

There are different strains of Hubbard - we've had white, brown and grey ones over the years. They finish at different ages, I believe.

That would explain why the brown ones are smaller than the whites

Yes, both times we've had hubbards, about 10% of them have had some brown colouring.  The brown ones we had grew bigger than the rest by the end too  .

Thanks for the link
Womble its strange that my browns are smaller than the white, maybe they catch up or grow faster towards the end ?

Hi,I think basically there a several different types of Hubbard, and they all come in a variety of colors.I have had big brown ones a couple of years ago, they were called color yield, but this time the brown ones seem smaller.

I think the brown ones will be Coloryield and the whites are some number I don't remember what.  They are all delicious but possibly Coloryield are a little slower growing.

If the whites are JA787 apparently some brown markings are possible.

Hi Your hubbard sare almost cetainly bred from a JA57 female which is a brown chicken, the brown birds are normally slightly smaller but still have the confirmation of the standard bird hope this helps THPF

Thanks for all the replies, As the feathers are getting thicker only 1 is all brown, the other 2 are a creamy brown and white
all 3 are noticeably smaller than the whites
