I didn't know that could happen; maybe they didn't either.
 
I used to have root-cellar envy but not anymore  :(

of all the things that can kill you I would have least suspected a spud....poor girl, what a hell of a shock, I know that some manure can kill too........ :(

Certain bacteria cause hydrogen sulphide to form which is very, very deadly.  It is heavier than air so tends to collect in confined spaces.
It can develop from just about anything.  At work we sometimes leave dirty water (rainwater that has picked up dirt from the floor and gone down a drain into a tank) in tanks for a while (about a month is all it takes) and it comes out black and stinking with enough H2S to kill.

Interesting on Wiki about Hydrogen Sulphide. A similar incident (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-21244835) happened in NI last year :o
