Post by: HappyHippy on September 02, 2013, 11:21:05 am
Apologies for the downright brutallity of this video (and please don't watch it if you're of a delicate disposition) but this is shocking..........  :'( :'( :'(

OMG that really is shocking. Words fail me. I've always said that the whole freedom food/rspca thing is nothing more than a marketing ploy dreamed up by the large producers and the supermarkets. The public have no idea what goes on and just see the nice point of sale material and think everything's ok.

I only managed to watch about the first 30 seconds. That was enough.
Words fail me  :(

Whilst i am obviously disgusted i am not surprised... The RSPCA may have once been a good institution but they are now a pretty ineffectual organization that need a major overhaul starting with putting real animal people in charge of the decision making process! They have totally lost their way! I would never donate money to them, local animal charities are far more worth helping...

totally outrageous couldnt watch it all the way through. i just cant understand how anyone could keep pigs in situations like this. I know a local RSPCA rep I have emailed her the link and expressed how disappointed i am with their responses..

RSPCA prefer a day at the races rather than cases like this oh and they are quite good at chasing swans too.

I HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF DEALING WITH FREEDOM FOODS AND CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THE INSPECTORS WHO CARRY OUT AUDITS ON FF FARMS ARE VERY GOOD BUT THEY CANNOT BE EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME,IT IS AN ANNUAL VISIT FOLLOWEDUP PROBABLY ONCE IN A YEAR BY A MONITORING OFFICER, THIS FILM IS TOTALLY DISGRACEFUL AND CANNOT BE CONDONED IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM AND SHOULD RESULT IN A PROSECUTION THIS IS VERY UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN ALL EVIDENCE WILL BE GONE BY THE TIME AN INVESTIGATION TAKES PLACE.THESE INSTANCES ARE THANFULLY FEW AND FAR BETWEEN 99,9% OF BRITISH FARMERS ARE OUTSTANDING WE WORK TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS IN THE WORLD AND WE ARE MORE REGULATED BY DIFFERENT BODIES THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY.PLEASE ASK YOURSELF WHY THE MEDIA ONLY WANTS TO SHOW US BAD NEWS STORIES, THE PEOPLE BEHIND THESE STORIES ARE RADICAL THEY DO NOT WISH TO SEE ANY ANIMALS KILLED FOR FOOD AND THER INTENTION IS TO DESTROY THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY,  THIS FORUM HAS MEMBERS WHO KNOW THE TRUTH, HAVE MET PEOPLE IN THE MEAT INDUSTRY AND KNOW THAT THEY ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMPASSIONATE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMALS , NOBODY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO GET AWAY WITH CRUELTY AND WE SHOULD ALL DO OUR UTMOST TO OUT PEOPLE WHO KEEP ANIMALS IN A POOR OR NEGLECTFUL WAY BUT PLEASE BE PROUD OF THE STANDARDS WHICH ARE UPHELD BY THE HUGE MAJORITY OF LIVESTOCK KEEPERS HOWEVER BIG OR SMALL THAT WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY.

And AMEN to that.
As in all walks of life its the rotten few eggs that spoil it for the vast majority. Not watched the clip as i know it will give me nightmares so don't know which species are involved but pigs and poultry seem to bear the brunt the bad press and as the above quote says British farmers keep their livestock to the highest standards in the world, as greggy says it doesn't get much tougher than this. :)

There is a lot of shocking material being circulated at the moment, some of which is being presented as something which happens here in the UK but which in fact is not legal here.

I suspect the comment about
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THESE STORIES ARE RADICAL THEY DO NOT WISH TO SEE ANY ANIMALS KILLED FOR FOOD AND THER INTENTION IS TO DESTROY THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY
has some truth in it.

I think it's a huge shame, because this sensationalising misinformation will be alienating people who do care but also know the truth about how things actually work in our own livestock industry.  People like me, for instance.

Edited to say I haven't watched the piggy video and have no specific view about RSPCA freedom foods.

I felt betrayed when I discovered that organic pork, which should to my understanding be free range by its very organic nature, does allow for the pigs to be housed in strawed yards for finishing - for a month or two - and/or when the weather and ground conditions are unsuitable for outdoor rearing.  Having now kept pigs through a couple of Cumbrian winters, I now know firsthand that they are much happier in the warm and dry with plenty of straw than outside up to their bellies in wet cold mud, or struggling to keep their feet on uneven ground that is frozen solid.  Another example of where the well-meaning ignorance of a consumer (ie, me, then) takes a different view to informed practical knowledge (me now.)

I agree with you entirely about standards in the main in this country..you dont have to be a radical though to be disgusted by such treatment and as an organisation the RSPCA should be making sure through whatever means that this doesnt happen. 10%, 1%, 0.1% non of these figures are acceptable in a sponsored/monitored food programme like 'Freedom Foods'

I watched a PETA (I think) video presented by P.Mcartney (of 'Wings' infamy... :P ) of the maltreatment of animals, being presented as if it was the norm in the UK - it isn't and whats more, none of the footage came from this country....

Be careful what you believe.

When i started with pigs I found out there was a pig farm just up the road from my land so i popped in to say hi hoping to learn something. but when i got there I was shown into a room in a out house no bigger than 12x12 there was slurry on the floor and at least 20 live pigs and and 5more dead and they were being eaten. I reported him to everyone I could think of trading standers the rspca farm crisis team. One year on i popped in (last week) and everything is the same. its just soo sad and i feel so helpless.
But this is one of the reasons i raise my pigs outdoors the way in do because I know they have had the best possable life.
