I put an ad on the internet for my Jag and it looks like it might be sold
I have been emailing someone from up north somewhere who is coming on Sat and seems pretty certain he wants it
Its been ages since I sold a car so what do I have to do? He says he will bring a bankers draft, which I presume is safe. Is there anything else I need to do. Obviously I have never met this guy, though I have spoken with him on the phone and he sounds very nice.
He has also asked me to put 6 mths tax on it (its currently sorned) and I am happy to do that.
Any advice gratefully accepted

assuming its a bankers draft and you do the relevant bits of the v5 for the transfer you should be fine, you have to send it off not them so fill it in so you're sure its done whilst he's there and you post the relevant bit!!!
-
Thanks for that - I sure he is ok, but just worry in case I do something silly. :relief:
-
Have someone with you - just in case. A woman on her own is fair game, he might try to reduce the price agreed or worse still make off with the car. I know you have been a business woman, just a reminder. :innocent:

Thanks for that Doganjo - I will bear the advice in mind, but he sounds perfectly nice over the phone, though I will be on my guard ::)

The only (tiny) risk with a bankers draft is either it not being made out properly (clerical error at bank) OR
(more of an issue) if it is stolen, this occasionally happens in bank raids. It won't clear any quicker than a normal cheque but as the chap is debited for it when it is issued, there isn't a risk of it being returned for lack of funds, essentially he buys the draft from the bank.
The draft should be issued from the bank itself, they are normally quite a bit bigger than a normal cheque. As well as the amount in writing and in the figures box, there's a diagonal line across in which the clerk writes 'not more than and then puts an amount 1p more than the amount of the draft - to stop additions or alterations).
So provided all this is complete and it's signed, in my old bank it was 2 signatures, that should be fine on the completeness front.
Re stolen drafts, what you need to do is to ask the buyer to ring you once the draft has been issued, they will have to collect it beforehand so this will probably be Friday, to give you all the serial numbers and bank branch details on the draft - and you need to know this info so you can ring up still in banking hours and confirm with that branch of that bank that the draft is genuine and not counterfeit or stolen.
Hope this helps :-)))

just be prepared for them not turning up - we waited in allday for a guy who was coming back to collect our car after viewing it in the morning, but no. some people dont have the courtesy to say they are not coming.
good luck. sell it "sold as seen" on the receipt, so it protects you if it breaks down,

As I say he sounds perfectly nice and perfectly genuine. In fact I have a very bad tooth infection at present and he phoned this morning while I was still in bed feeling sorry for myself and it turns out he is a dentist  Might even ask him for some tooth advice when he calls :roflanim:
I would prefer not to ask him to give me all the numbers as it implies I don't trust him, which I do, but on the other hand I dont want to be a naive fool and I wouldnt have liked to just take a cheque and let a total stranger drive off with it if you know what I mean
I feel pretty sure he is genuine and think I will just take a chance that he is ok, which I am sure he is. I think asking him to bring a bankers draft is enough. :fc:
Just thought I would run the bankers draft thing past you guys first, and also ask the form re the documentation aspect when selling a vehicle.

Hi Sue
I went with a friend to collect a van from a trader last week. The trader insisted he arranged to collect the bankers draft from the local branch of my friends bank with the trader. He told me he was recently given a stolen/photocopy of a draft and he would never trust them again. The other alternative was for my friend to have computer access so he could transfer the funds by his bankline account.
What a have done before is take the traders bank details and arranged for someone to have the funds to transfer if I call them and go ahead with purchase. But you also need to be careful as there is a fraud where people say they have transferred you money, but really all they have done is paid a duff cheque in over the counter. Nightmare dealing with these things but be careful!!!!
By the way, pm me your email addrress as I have some info for you regarding the planning matter we discussed on Saturday!!

Thanks Shaun - will pm you now.
I think I will go with my gut feeling and assume the guy is ok. :fc:
After all there can't be many confidence tricksters who masquerade as dentists, know about antibiotics and give you sound dental advice :roflanim:

thats what they say to do nowadays. i prefer cash but then my cars arent worth that much ::)

I'm a bit of a cynic - used to work for a bank - so I know bank drafts aren't 100% certain, ie not cleared funds as mentioned before, and like cheques they can bounce for various reasons, meanwhile car is gone. Cash is king! Maybe a bit old fashioned and can be faked too so not perfect either.
In this day and age he should be able to phone his bank while he's with you having decided he wants the car, and arrange an instant transfer over the phone or even on internet banking with a mobile. You can confirm by the same methods that the money is in your account as cleared funds. ALL the high street banks can do this for increasingly larger sums of money.
Tax...presumably you've got the car insured, but he is paying for the tax? Worst case, you tax it, he doesn't buy, you lose 2 months tax if you get the disc refunded (going into September!) or keep it taxed.
As for faking being a dentist...I saw a bit of one of those fake cowboy programmes with Dominic what'shisface recently - someone pretending to be a dental tech making dentures for people that were shockingly bad and running off with their dosh too!
PS Agree with having someone else with you
PPS I hate having toothache!

Cash, or instant bank transfer. For cheaper cars I ask for proof of identity, one I sold was used in a theft after.

You can search the dental register to check him out if you have a look on the gdc.org website

Thanks for that Shaun
He said he has to travel down from Newcastle, and there is a dentist registered in Sunderland with his Surname and the correct intials. so I think my intuition is right and he is an OK guy :D
He says he is really excited about buying the car, so I hope it lives upto his expectations. It has only done just over 12500 miles, sailed through its MOT this month, and all in all looks pretty good. I gave it to myself for my 50th, but personal circumstance meant it had very little use and was sorned for the last few years
I have to say I think it is one of the prettiest cars ever made, and I would guess will be a real classic of the future, but it has to go. I think even if I get an A-frame fitted to the back of the "bus" that a Jag is not really going to look right :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim:

Wow it is a lovely car. Have to say I agree with ferretkeeper, drafts are not 100%, but you wouldn't get an instant transfer through I think for what your is worth....
Probably the best option in the circumstances.

i know the car is pretty, i dribbled a bit over it when i saw it parked up at darkbrowneggs place...
very nice car...

Why can't he just do a bank transfer money is there then, last time we bought a vehicle we did the transfer then went for longish lunch came back a couple of hours later and took the vehicle when funds had gone through. I know someone who lost their car to a false bankers draft.
Good luck
