Every year I have to protect my hives from woodpeckers and this year there are a LOT of them about! What I can't rememberis when I am supposed to do it! This year I am going to be later than normal with taking the honey off because the season was late starting and seems to be late finishing, so ot sure when I am supposed to protect them - any ideas?

According to my bee book, about October. I just looked it up today because we have so many green woodpeckers around. I guess it's at the stage when the bees become less active and able to defend themselves. Certainly mine would defend like crazy at the moment,

Thanks for that - I thought as much but I may do it earlier, as the woodpeckers seem to be having a go at pretty much everything in sight. (including my newly-installed beautiful new wooden windows :furious: !)
