hi I am trying to deal with a ewe who has a bad foot, have'nt yet
diagosed exatley, but have a hunch its a mud ball or stone that
coursed a wound. on one side of the inner toe.
I have cleaned it and now sprayed it with oxytetrin, thats the name
but it is oxytetracycline, active ingredient, blue coulerent added ect..
had thought about antibiotic jab and of course its saterday and
after 12am so vets are only on call out fee's,
I would like to know if anyone knows if this is antibiotic, or antiseptic spray,
as I googled it and it is not clear, also i am in france and am translating.

no expert bit I think thats an antibiotic, see how she goes over next 48 hours, moght be sore to start with and then get better xx

I beleive oxytetracycline to be an antibiotic.

thanks i think so too, so will see, and wait till monday if jab is needed.
would any one recomened straping the foot too stop mud, or wash down every day
and spray.? you don't see that many sheep about with plasters!

Hi there
As a vet, I will confirm that oxytetracycline is an antibiotic, and is pretty good against bugs that live around feet.
If it looks like a stone or something has caused damage to one part of the foot, then cutting away any loose hoof around the area and spraying with the oxytetrin spray every couple of days should help.
Sometimes if the infection or damage has travelled in further, they may need an injection of oxytetracycline, or a similar antibiotic to attack the problem from both sides.
I wouldn't recommend washing, you are more likely to wash bugs further in to the damaged area, or give them moisture that they need to survive, likewise I wouldn't suggest strapping, as a lot of bugs that live in the soil don't like too much air getting to them, and strapping will keep the area warm and moist which would be ideal for the bugs.
Leave the foot open to the air to dry it out, and spray with the blue spray for now and see how she goes.
If she's still looking lame on Monday, could then be worth getting an injection for her.

Having a vet confirm it does help.
I did pretty much what you said yesterday, apart from the washing bit,
Too late, although I put a bit of iodine in the water to removed the mud then
Sprayed her foot. She look alright today, should I spray again its sure to have
Some mud in there again. And I think to be safe I’ll get her a jab Monday.

Sorry to put a double post on, but well just in for the field where I found
Her in the barn holding pen, so easy to get, and she’s looking much perkier
Today a bit feisty even. So gave her another spray, no wash this time! And no mud balling
Problems as cut for the broken hoof areas last time.
Plus she’s keeping up with the flock now which is always a good sign.
