Title: vaccinations for chickens
Post by: mentalmilly on August 24, 2013, 04:41:12 pm
Does anyone vaccinate their chickens?  I know you are not supposed to mix non vaccinated chickens with vaccinated ones.  However my vaccinated stock is over 1 year old and some over 2-3 years old.  Would these birds be a threat to new non vaccinated pullets after a year old?  Is it wise to vaccinate all birds you breed yourself?  I can vaccinate all my birds from a day old for IB and Newcastles disease in the drinking water, but dont like the idea of injecting my day olds for the rest. Does anyone do this?  At the moment l have non vaccinated birds with the vaccinated (did this before l was aware of the problems) and we dont seem to have a problem with health.  Would like to know of anyone's experience with this.

I've never vaccinated any of ours and I don't know anyone who has.

I did-I have some that I put in with some hybrids. I won't do it again because I'll not get hybrids/commercials again and have separate pens for my breeding stock. I've not seen any problems (which doesn't mean they aren't there) with the younger ones, I am not sure how long the vaccines last or what they were vaccinated with. I also don't foresee buying in any more stock now.

No. All ours are hatched here the only birds I've ever bought in are geese.

I had some warrens which were fully vaccinated, but again what against?  I am now hatching my own so probably wont buy any more, so no vaccination.  It may cause more problems than it prevents.  Thanks

I've bought some in that were vaccinated against Mareks and they're with our own that have not been (and others that came in from other sources that haven't). Not been a problem so far - our biggest issue was Avian Leukosis which can't be vaccinated against. From what the vet says, it's very expensive to vaccinate at the level we hatch at (fine if you're hatching a thousand a day and your livelihood depends on them) so I've not bothered.
