Title: Something in the reeds made the puppy sneeze
Post by: jaykay on August 20, 2013, 05:00:05 pm
We were coming back from our walk, and the pup spotted something in a clump of seaves, and dived in. I got the impression of something escaping through the reeds - pup was on an extending lead. Whatever left was maybe smaller than a full-sized rabbit, but a lot bigger than a mouse, I'd have said. Could have been a bird too.

Anyway, since then, the pup has been sneezing her head off. If we live in America you'd have thought she'd found a skunk!

Is there anything anyone can think of, that would have made her sneeze like this?

I've check in case it was a seed or something in her nose - nothing. I've washed her face (as well as the rest of her!) in the beck, which seemed to ease it but not stop it.

Any ideas?

Could be a reaction to one of the plants she dived through. I would probably try  antihistamine ( piriton )
first to see if it settles. If not then there may be a bit of plant debris or seed shot up the nasal cavity. It isn't always visible and sometimes requires an endoscope to examine further up the nasal canal and sometimes behind the soft palate. Vets visit advised if it doesn't settle.

There aren't any bird or mammal I can think of that leave a smell but would have thought it should have settled if it was a bad smell.
The other thought is  nettle sting or insect sting. Can cause sneezing if the lining of the nose reacts. Again piriton should help.

It's not snake country where you are? Tho I would imagine quite a swelling if there was a snake bite

Poor girl. Hope she is sorted soon  :fc:

Thanks MS

The sneezing has stopped and she's fast asleep at the moment, so hopefully, whatever caused it, it's over  :fc:

Nah, woken up, sneezing again.

No piriton, got cetirizine or loratidine, can dogs have those?

Vets in the morning I think  :-\

Probably something caught up her nose, it will probably clear in time. Hope she's right as rain by tomorrow morning

This gives you information.

This is generally considered a safe antihistamine in dogs. The highest dose is about 0.5mg/kg once a day but I doubt you'd need that much.  One 10mg tablet should be enough.

maybe the animal she was chasing sprayed urine in her face/up her nose? i dont know much about wildlife but there are the weasel/stoat thingys that like water.
or maybe the seeds from the water reeds went up her nose?

Thanks Annie, that's great

That's what I wondered ShyGirl. I'm inclining towards the reed seed. She's still sneezing hard, but periodically (ie she stops to chew for a while) and then starts sneezing again.

She's still sleeping in my room, so no doubt I'll hear how she goes overnight.

Poor Daisy - it's no fun sneezing for hours!  (Sorry Daisy, but it's funny too.  It shouldn't be, but it is.)

And poor you, if she keeps it up all night!   :fc: it settles down and you both get a good night's sleep.

How is she this morning? Hope you both managed a reasonable sleep.

Thanks Sally and Sharon  :) She slept ok (therefore so did I) and apart from a few sneezes this morning, she seems ok  :fc:

Phew, peace reigns. Pup ok, Skerry (female BC)  doesn't need to 'sort her out' for sneezing anymore, which in Skerry's world view was just another example of bad puppy behaviour (Skerry is just a grump, the pup is perfectly well behaved for a pup).

Glad it's settling.   :relief:
If the sneezing does show up again a quick checkup would benefit. A foreign body in  the nasal cavity is very difficult to find once it becomes embedded. Hopefully that's the end of it  :fc: it would be interesting to know what happened

 , that's good, sometimes it can be something that's got into the eye and passed down the nose, a tiny bit of pollen etc.......they are a worry but glad the sneeze is over

Well we've had a relatively sneeze-free day, so whatever it was looks as though it's gone.

Thanks for listening and for all the help.

I don't suppose it'll be the last thing with her ladyship, but hopefully they'll all be as small and quickly resolved as this one  :)

She could have even banged her nose, they are a worry....I asked a while ago what antihistamine I could give my over itchy female, she is OK again now but I have loads of cetirizine from my allergy so she can have some of that...glad I read  your post and even gladder she is better!
