Title: Day old Ross Cobbs
Post by: sokel on August 13, 2013, 10:08:56 am
Does anyone know where we can buy day old Ross Cobbs ?  we would obviously need them to be in a reasonable distance from Northumberland and happy to take them in larger amounts

I don't know, no - but what's your plan?  Are you going to rear free range table birds?  Potential customer here if you are... ;)

That's the plan , mainly for ourselves so we know what we are eating  ::) but if we buy a lot there could be some spare ones.

Is this commercial broilers you are looking for?

I worked with broilers for many years, the two strains we used were produced by two companies called Cobb and Ross and we alternated between the two depending on price/performance etc.

The nearest commercial hatchery to you I know of is the Vion Hatchery at Duns, Berwickshire so I suppose it depends how far down Northumberland you are.

Vion Ltd
Hatchery,
Station Road ,
Duns,
Berwickshire,
TD11 3HS

Phone : 01361 884 764

Its been many years since I worked there but they used to supply small numbers of live and culled chicks.

Worth a call

Thanks for that.  Typical we are as far down as you can get in Northumberland.  Still a day trip to Berwick isn't that bad.

I have just started a correspondence with a person on another forum about this exact thing so I will report back if I get a response. They operate out of Spilsby in Lincolnshire.

I heard somewhere that it was possible to send day old chicks in the post!!!

I got some (24 I think) Hubbards (which, incidentally are a little slower growing than Ross Cobbs and completely delicious: killed from 14 weeks to about 30 weeks, lol) from this guy.  They were delivered to the nearest commercial producer and I collected from there.  I believe they deliver ationwide, so you just have to wait till they're heading your way.

'Fast' growing chickens for meat - Mainly Hubbard's slow growing strains, JA757, 787, Coloryield and Mastergris but also some Ross.

That's interesting Hev because the chap's name on the other forum was "poulet" so I wonder if it is the same person.

Exciting!  Which strain are you getting?  I had 3: colouryield, Mastergris and umm.. a number.  They were all excellent but the mastergris chicks are seriously cute: they look like little bluetit babies.

Have you had meat birds before?  Even the day old chicks are eating machines...

They are Hubbards. We picked 50 up today , fantastic healthy Chicks

Feeding is not a problem as we get our layers pellets, Chick Crumbs and growers by the mixed ton so always have plenty here
