Post by: sybilandmable on August 10, 2013, 09:12:29 pm
Hi all

I have nine orphan lambs I brought in march 4 boys and 5 girls I am just wondering what sort of price I should expect as I need to sell them due to unforeseen circumstances.

Any advice much appreciated.

Many thanks

we're going to our local lamb sale on tuesday to see what the prices are like before we decide what to send to market but hoping for better prices this year for NCC's

Market price for fat lambs is about £2/kg live weight

Good store lambs trading £60 to £70
----- but this is all for commercially reared stock
Orphans can be less vigorous and it will depend on weight/breed/the buyer

If you can find a young child to go into the ring with them, it can help  :innocent:

My dad always put me in the ring with the lambs but was never sure was that to push the price up or in the hope that someone would buy me  ;D

Pet (hand-reared) lambs never fetch as much in the ring - it is thought that they never grow as well as ones reared on their mother.

But yes, a cute kid in the ring with them will induce some sympathy bids ;)

these weren't hand reared, all on the mothers but its good to get the awwwww factor if prices aren't doing so well

these days he's down-sized to a flock of 130 NCC ewes so a few lambs to go off again in september but general consensus up here is that prices should be up slightly on last year  :fc:

If it is any help, we had 35 fat lambs away last week, averaging 18kg deadweight, averaged £73/head.  We have 130 store lambs going away at 5.30 in the morning at £51/head.  We are very disappointed with the price for the store lambs, they are strong and stylish, but at this time of year cash flow is always at its worst, and we still have very little grass, so need to shift them to save the grass for the lambs to be retained for breeding stock.
