I have had a great day ...spent it re loading windows xp . It somehow died and wiped itself clean off the pc ???? bugs me thinks ?? still almost back to normal now . Have had to wipe and re install Norton, as well as XP . Lots of other programs I am having to re install as I slowly go through them . Never had this before , had just about every other sort of hard drive failure , power supply failure , mother board popping , graphic cards burning out and god know what else , but never this ....really strange. Still see how long it stays running now. I remember my first pc !!! it didn't have a hard drive , just two 51/4" floppy drives , one for the system and one for the program you were running !!!
Oh how I love PC's ::)

Russ go to Avira AntiVirus and download the free personal home anti-virus. It's about the best free one around and is updated daily. Don't bother with that norton crap.

That happened to me as well. One day no Windows. Unfortunately me being no IT wizz the computer is still sitting there and I use my work laptop!! I've always been told that Norton is no good - is it really true?

It's fine as long as you update it super-regularly (for a fee). Imho avira is better and autoupdates everyday.

To be honest - from a person who used to work for a software house
None of them are any good ::)
As soon as you buy them the bug writers have written a lot more bugs and hackers are writing more cr*p too, and unless these software companies are:-
A Aware of the problem
B Work in the language that the bug is in
C Have the workforce to write a patch or fix to stop it within 4 hours
D Have an automatic update that has good filters and works properly on your disk
I'm sure I have missed something else too -
I had Norton for 10 years. The only think I hate about that bloody company is that when you want rid of it, unless you understand hidden files and where to get all norton files deleted,
besides the normal un-install routine -
it is still sitting on your disk and interfering with any new software that you install -
they make it difficult so that you will give in and go back to upgrading your Norton
- crafty, scheming little *******s'
I now use Kaspersky - and that is turning out to be useless too - used to filter all spam and now lets everything through - even standard viagra which should be blocked from all angles.
So - Hope the free one works -
but the best bet by far is to go out and buy a plug in second storage unit that will take all your user files and photographs and settings -
and BACK UP EVERYTHING at least
once a week - that way you only risk losing a weeks work.
I know I sound like a help line person - had to do that for a while too - Is the computer switched on, is the plug in the wall, have you switched................. thank god for alternative living ;D ;D ;D

It's funny you should say that. I have had an issue all week at work with my computer not picking up my printer. I checked everything and yes it was set up as my default printer. Waited for the IT guys to come and sort and had to send all my work elsewhere to print etc etc and generally have driven everyone mad.
Today my IT person came at last and I did my rant about them taking all this time and delaying my work - end of month figures not in you know the sort of thing - really laying the guilt on him.
He stood back to assess the situation and think why it would not work and then said ahhh, I know what's wrong
and plugged the printer in trying not to say anything rude to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :dunce:

Oh dear, poor you! Bet you felt really embarrassed. Been there - a long time ago now and have learned a few things since then.

No need to feel embarrased - every 3 out of ten forgot to switch it on or plug it in
Its the stress of work that does it - your mind is on so many things that the basics get overlooked and that is normal, as you believe that they are always switched on or plugged in.
I blame those contract cleaners with them damn Henry thingys ;D ;D ;D
