Title: Wheaten Marans - anyone have them in Scotland?
Post by: Steph Hen on July 29, 2013, 09:48:04 am
I bought some Wheaten Marans hatching eggs from a breeder in Monmouth. It wasn't planned, I'd never seen them before and they were stunning hens, lay a really dark egg, and as the breeder promised, are easy to sex at a couple of weeks.

So I have 3 hens and 4 (soon to be 2) boys and wondered if anyone at all locally to me keeps them and fancies swaping cockerals? Or maybe selling some hatching eggs or something? Hope to find someone up here who keeps them?

The Marans Club of Great Britain -  www.themaransclub.co.uk (http://www.themaransclub.co.uk) -  is keen to get folk with the French varieties to show them at the various shows, with a view to getting them accepted by The Poultry Club.  And there is a push to get those with stock/eggs for sale to let the club know so they can put buyers/sellers/swappers in touch with one another

If you follow the link it gives the Marans Club of France standard, which would be the one which would be adopted here.

Try to make sure you are breeding from a pure line, and not one which has been crossed in with other colours, which may then cause you problems further on down the line.

Its only £6 to join The Marans Club of Great Britain, and if you show your birds in a recognized class you can get a card and apply for a special Marans Club rosette, plus your contact details are available to other club members.

Thanks for that link darkbrowneggs.
I'll have to wait a while as they're only 5 weeks, but look pretty good. I guess I'll have to hit ebay for hatching eggs or maybe join the Marrans club..?
Wish I'd seen that some of your stock was coming to Scotland as I'd have loved to have had some! So far, I've been amazysed at the amount of poorly bred birds out there!

I have also realised that it is/can be spelt wheaton. At least it got me a few more ebay egg hits!

I really want to read what the Marans club has to say, but the writing is SO minute that it hurts to try to read it, genuinely  :tired:   And yes - I am wearing my specs  ;D

Is there a way to see it in a larger print, or does the web designer have to change it?

use the ctrl button and the plus button to increase the size, then the ctrl and minus button to reduce it again.

I'm such a  :dunce:    Control + didn't work but when I fiddled about I managed to kill the whole thing  ::) .   Came back ok.   I think I'll just do without seeing the website.

Whilst 'zoom' didn't work on the website, now when I look at 'extra smileys' on here it's HUGE  :roflanim:   Shows there is a zoom button I suppose.

Don't worry, I'll crawl back under my stone.

You need to hold the ctrl button down while pressing the plus button as many times as you need for it to enlarge enough to be legible.  However I use Chrome, and Opera, it may not work on other browsers?

I have discovered how I killed it.  I pressed a button marked 'Z' which seemed a likely candidate for zoom.   But no - apparently it means zzzzz as in sleeping, so I sent my computer to sleep.   I suppose that's the key to press if someone walks into the room when you're looking at something you shouldn't?

The controls and systems on computers are I believe meant to be intuitive, but for me, having grown up in a pre-computer era they are absolutely not - my brain just doesn't work the same way.

I'll just leave it Annie thanks, so the thread can get back on topic.

Annie?  The one who will be 70 at the end of the year, do you mean?  ;) :excited: :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim:

:roflanim:  yes but your brain must work differently to mine    I have intuition and logic, just not the same as is needed for computers - all electronic stuff in fact. It took me ages of just staring at the blank outside of the CD player before I realised I needed a remote control to work it  ::)    I can still barely use my phone other than for the basics - even the 'BlackBerry for morons' doesn't cover what I don't get  :roflanim:    We can compare brains at Simon's, as we should both be there
