i spent the morning shelling prawns with the kids. 90% of the prawns had eggs, so we must have thrown away a million eggs for 2 cups of shelled prawns.
what a waste? is this normal and why do they not prevent such wastage after all the drama about over fishing.

I only every buy them ready peeled, takes ages to shell enough for me :pig: :innocent:

iv no idea, im incredibly squimish. seeing the eggs gave me the heeby geebys :-[ :-[ had to force myself to continue shelling them as my daughters were watching...lol ::) ::)
the prawns were cooked and frozen so i presume you could eat them?

my dad's a prawn fisherman on the west coast of Scotland but because he uses creels rather than trawl nets he gets less prawns with eggs. I worked in a prawn processing plant for 6 years and used to hate 'green season' not only because it messes up with the weights of the prawns but the factory floor would just be a sea of green eggs, I hate to think how many were washed away down the drains over the years :(

how would you know if they are fertile? is caviar fertile eggs, i wonder. never tasted it, il be brave enough oneday.
i thought it would be educational for the kids to shell the prawns as they adore eating them but now my 10 yr old has refused to eat them. oh dear. :eyelashes:

We often buy a kg of prawns when they are just 5 € a kg. I sometimes make a a soup with the shells - garlic shallots carrot veg stock cube tomatoes paste and harrisa ( ?spell check). I hand blitz it, sieve it the let ant grit settle before eatiing.
OR - we let the pigs have the shells mixed with their feed.
