Title: boar movement

Hi all,i need some advice please?
I have been trying to move my GOS boar and for some stupid reason he wont go over to our 1 sow who is due on any minute now,tried walking him and tried getting him into the horse box to move him,when we bought him he had a ring in his nose and was just wondering would you be able to move him via his ring the same as a bull?

I wouldn't try it myself, their noses are really sensitive and it could hurt him - with the result he'd not trust you or be inclined to do anything for you in the future  :-\
It would be better if you could move the sow to him, it'll also mean he doesn't spend the first day scent marking everywhere and will concentrate on the job at hand  ;)

I would bring the sow to him if you can. If not get his nose into a bucket of feed and retreat slowly so he walks along while he's stuffing his face. We always have trouble moving ours too.

i remember trying to move some stores through the gate and over the hardcore but they wouldnt go. we never had this with any other lots we had as we always trained them to the bucket after that. but i know how frustrating it was.
is he bucket trained? have you tried pig boards and a stick? it takes a bit of practise but it does work.

i was trying to move him tonight but he was making such a fuss,would of thought i was sending him to slaughter bless him,Tilley our sow is just damn right stubborn and wont move for anything,usually Gerald will follow food anywhere but tonight he had it on him,ill give it another go tomorrow but think i might have to find a recruit aswell,on my own was hopeful anyway i think ??????????

How fascinating this is, having never been in this situation of having to get a boar and sow together.   Thought they'd be gagging for it without a hint of reluctance from either party.    Just goes to show - I learn something new every day on this forum!   Good luck and hope you find a solution  :fc: :fc:

It's hard work box training as they get older always better to do younger, last month had to do a refresher course with our boar it took 5 days before he would happily walk in. But now he's as good as gold again.

As stated above sow should go to boar, try using an over ripe pineapple (not promising) but she might just follow it.
