Title: pigs new home
Post by: kp on July 29, 2009, 05:49:12 pm
I'm building a shed at the moment to house a chest freezer (the pigs new home) among other things, can anyone tell me the size of freezer in cubic feet I will need for two pigs.

they are oxford sandy and blacks and I think they weigh about 160lbs at the moment, I thought I'd take them to about 180 - 200lbs as I'd like to do my own bacon

Our 4ft x 2ft x 3ft freezer will take 2 boned out pigs (100 k. dw) comfortably with room for other stuff.  Totally cleared out it will take 3 as above but its a squeeze requiring careful packing.

thanks for that, it's roughly the size I was thinking about. Hilarysmum can you tell me if you can freeze the meat and then make bacon with it at a later date or is it best done as soon as its slaughtered?

I do it both ways.  As long as the meat is totally thawed out no problem.
