Title: Hi from Scotland

Hello all


Not really a smallholder, but am married to a shepherd/farm manager on a large sporting estate.  My main interest are the border collie sheepdogs - breeding, raising and training.  This year (as my son starts school full time) I will be helping out more with the other various jobs required daily.  We have care of 2500 Blackface ewes, a handful of Wensleydales and Alpaca and 22 Highland coos.  I also have experience of owning hens, a Highland and Shetland pony.  Would love a pair of Clydesdales one day  ;D

Hello and welcome from sunny Carnoustie  :wave:

We have 12 acres plus 10 rented; Coloured Ryeland sheep (30 at the moment); Shetland cattle (8 currently), 2 Kune Kune pigs (for the freezer), 100 or so hens, a Highland pony and  a Shetland pony.
Plus two 13 year old pet collies and three cats.

Hope you enjoy the forum - a few BC owners and enthusiasts on here  :)

What area are you? Do you train owners with sheepdogs as I would be interested in that?

I am in the Lammermuir Hills, between Berwick and Edinburgh, but plan to split my time as much as possible between here and the new cottage we have just bought in Glen Etive in the Highlands.  The long term plan is to move lock, stock and barrel to the Glen Etive, but that won't be for the foreseeable future.


My hubby is the expert handler and has helped people to train their dogs in the past, but tends to be too busy with his every day work to do it very often.  I can try to find someone in your area who holds lessons if you would like?

There are a few handlers up your way, but am struggling to find someone who trains people to train their dogs, but am still on the case  ;D

I'm really grateful, I had looked a bit and was really surprised not to find anything at all, so any pointers would be great, maybe it's cos of the amount of beef cattle farms more than sheep here.

i see you keep alpacas and cattle. we were discussing this the other day about tb risk etc. do you have to take any special precautions and do they share the same ground? id be interested to know. thanks

But no, our alpaca do not share the same ground as our cattle and therefore we don't have to take any special measures.
