Title: Chicken that thinks its a budgie
Post by: Hilarysmum on July 27, 2009, 06:11:12 pm
We have a 5 week old brahma chicken, (not sure of sex) who was a single hatch out of 22.  He has had the best of everything plus loads of company from the cats, dogs and us.  Now he thinks he is a budgie.  He stands on a perch, plays with a ball, I am sure he would ring a bell if he had access to one.  He stands on the platform/door when its open, doesnt quite sing, but very close.  He runs around the floor, is very demanding, so far he hasnt taken a bath but I am sure thats next on the agenda.

My problem is that in a couple of weeks time he/she will have to join the rest of the flock.  Not sure how they are going to take to the budding Pavaroti.  Any advice gratefully accepted.

Thanks

He is very cute, but brahmas become very big, not sure even a parrot cage would be big enough.  He is very confident with the cats, getting better with the dogs and absolutely paranoid about the pig.  Oddly the pig is the least dangerous, as he is only interested in the food in the cage whereas the others would quite like a little taste.

Its a real problem, as he is an only, its going to be difficult to introduce him to the rest of the birds.  So far he has never been outside of the house although he does run around the floor chasing his ball.  (Yes I know its pathetic).  If he is a male (as I am assuming) he can eventually go into the pot, although its a shame as he is a really handsome bird, but cant do that to a female.  Its a sisterhood thing.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!    p  l  e  a   s  e

I'd just do things gradually, starting now. Take him outside and supervise - let him have a wee individual run and give him and the others corn together with him enclosed and protected. That way they'll get used to him and maybe associate him with good things such as food.

Sounds like a real character, though.

Glad there's someone else as daft as me!!!! I have a hen with only an upper beak, who has had lots of extra attention, she considers herself a "house hen",,as I type she is sitting on the back of the chair, :),jumps on my shoulder, beds down with my 6 dogs, wanders round the farm feeding and watering etc with me and the dogs! I do manage to get her to roost at night in the chicken house, but I'm sure she'd rather be in the house,in bed if possible!!!!When I've been out she runs up to the gate when she hears my truck! I haven't really tried to integrate her back with others as I have to keep her seperate when she's eating her special runny food or the others will pinch it, but sure yours will be fine in time. Good luck
