My lovely husband has made me a fantastic milking stand, I was wondering about getting him to make another to sell on. It made out of wood, with a head yoke, feed trough and all sanded off ready to be painted or treated if required.
What do you guys think? Is there a market for them?
The only other ones I've seen for sale are from Ascott and £200!
His one is well made but not heavy at all
Any thoughts?
Would post a piccy but just can't master it on here :-[
-
Definitely a market for them and I'd say anything made for a task by someone who actually uses one for that very task, is perfect! ie. you know what they need in order to make them brilliant :)
transportation might be an issue though, suppose courier? local delivery?
I paid about £100 for mine, second hand.
-
If I didn't have one, I would have been interested. What sort of price would you be thinking of? Less than Ascott would help wo long as you market them well.

Whereabouts are you and how much were you thinking of charging?
-
I'm in Staffordshire, hadn't got a definite price in mind yet, just thought I'd ask on here first and see what folks thought.
If I had interest I'd get him to make a few more, this is the second one as we're using the first. Not sure if its his idea of a relaxing way to spend a boiling hot Sunday afternoon though, but he made it anyway
Could offer to put a back rail as well I guess, ours is against a wall so not a problem.
What do people think its worth, £100 maybe? :-\
-
I have put it on preloved so will see how we get on :fc:
-
I love the design, it looks brilliant. I'd put one on ebay with a reserve of say, £85, see how high the bidding goes? when we bought our calf hutch it was from a livestock show at the NEC - they took loads of orders that day, I think those places are great for taking a sample and then delivering after
-
Well if you want it tested out one if my Boer x nannies in it. I had one made and they demolished it in no time. I think they need to be outed together as nails and screws just don't take the pressure of a wriggling goat. Granted if you have a separate area to keep it and only lead one in that is quiet should be fine.
Looks fab though. Definitely a market for this type of thing especially for the non diy people like me. I'm thinking a metal sheep trimming stand might be stronger though.
-
Thanks
eBay was our next step, thought I'd try preloved first because eBay charges soon add up!
Might put up some ads in our local feed stores aswell........

im wanting a milking stand. i wonder what the postage would be to aberdeenshire?
would definitely need a side rail as my goats have ants in their pants.
-
Very nice, but I prefer the feeder a bit higher up so that they keep their heads up. Dont ask me why its just how I have always had them ::)
you could list them on UK goats free of charge
-
Not sure about postage to Aberdeenshire! Probably more than the stand.
The feed box height could be altered easily as its fixed on afterwards.
Will look at the uk goats site, thanks
-
If you are serious about selling, I'd look at making it 'flat packable' so postage is more reasonable.
-
I am sure they would sell at that price. I looked at the Ascott one - price put me off though. What breed of goat have you had on your stand? Just thinking of my tall, quite heavy Anglo Nubian and BA x Sanann, who are also long!!
-
I'm currently milking an Alpine type goat but just taken delivery of my mums big bouncy Toggenburg/saan for a few days and she will definitely test out its robustness!
Will mention to hubby about he flat pack idea  could probably do that.....
He could make bigger, longer if required aswell
Will try and get a picture of gertie goat (the Tog) on it as a size guide
-
You may want to think about the standing area to be easily cleanable, like an off-cut of non-slip lino or similar. There will always be some spilt milk, not to mention other accidents and dirty feet...
Mine gets a wipe after every milking.
-
Hmmm, Lino may be slippy when wet? rubber stable mat type stuff may be better.
All good ideas  thanks
-
Rubber matting would be ideal. Let us know how the test drive with the big goat goes ;D

My other half built this for a friend (clydesdaleclopper) and she seems pretty pleased. It will still be in use in 100 years as long as it gets a lick of paint every other year and as far as we can see he really has thought of every eventuality. Transport can be sorted quite cheaply to anywhere in the country as he works for one of the UK's largest removals firms.
Heres a few tech specs:
flatpackable
ajustable feet for stability on any uneven surfaces
adjustable side rail that can be fitted to either side
ramp can be off the end or either side
adjustable headstock so not a problem for horned goats
quick release headstock mechanism so a panicked goat won't hurt itself
light enough not to have to remorgage the house just to pay for transport
easy assembly (it must be as i put one together without any input from the other half)
useful for trimming feet or other management tasks, not just milking!
also being marketed to farriers for trimming shetland/mini ponies feet - very very strong and robust
Anyone interested in having one for themselves, with any adjustments for your own personal requirements, just drop us a line.
