Hi,
I'm going next week to take my certificate of competence so that I can get my Animal Transporter Authorisation Type 1 for journeys up to 8 hours.
Anyone done this before and can give me any tips??
Many thanks.

I've sat mine.......
Its really common sense, but be aware that some answers that us hardened animals keepers would give, is not the answer the bosses want!
They were the questions to do with food and water, and medical help. We don't feed or water our animals in the trailer and don't intend on stopping every hour to check them either but I'm sure they ask the "What if an animal were injured on your journey?" and other little questions that may just catch you out.
Usually the testers are good-hearted and will help you to amend your test!!
Good luck!

Fantastic, thank you ukag.
They have sent me through some 'sample questions', which as you say seem like common sense. I managed to get them all right, so I'll be crossing my fingers they are all like that on Monday! :)

Good luck let us know how you get on.

Thank you HilarysMum, I will let you know.

I passed! I was very nervous, but pretty much 'common sense'.
I can start looking further afield to build up my herd.

Congratulations. Well done.

Does everyone need to take this test if they are picking up thier pigs and then moving them on to the abattoir?? ie just general transportation.
Or is this a special qualification for moving larger numbers of pigs over greater distances???
-
I think if you are taking the pigs beyond a certain distance? others will know better than I, if unsure check out DEFRA website.

As I understand it.....but worth checking the Defra booklet and website.
You don't need one if it is not connected to an economical activity and up to 50km (about 31miles).
I needed to get one because I intend to sell surplus meat, also when I am breeding will want to sell stock.

You contact your local Animal Health people for the authorisation and then take the competence test.
