More than they merit, no doubt.

I wouldn't donate to them anyway because they don't operate in Scotland but they're rapidly losing respect.

That is appalling. Ok, they are entitled to a decent salary but, if they choose to work for a charity, they should be prepared to work for a sensible amount and let the charity have more. I wonder if the hundreds of volunteers that help them know this details.

Unfortunately, they seem over zealous nowadays.  Its very strange that they target people like this lady and her dog, but horses in a field with no water or anything, that's fine, as they are stood up  (oh, and my friend is taking water because he feels sorry for them)
People who report "cruelty" obviously do not realise what they put these animal owners through, by their actions.  If it happened to them, they would soon change their tune.  I, and people I know, dread seeing a white van parked near our fields, which is ridiculous as there are so many white vans.  But its worrying all the same.  I do not donate any more, and am quite happy to explain my reasons to the person shaking the tin - but they are only volunteers and its not their fault.

They have however *finally* managed to get one particular repeat offender convicted in South Wales recently.

Last summer i had a malicious complaint made against me and the RSPCA woman ordered me to come out of work to discuss the 'horrendous condition' (her words) of my shetland mare.

pony has sweetitch , had wrecked yet another rug and was quietly grazing in her field, no midges about, pissing it down actually, thats why her rug was off to be repaired (again).

She had brought a tame vet who reccomended the treatment for this condition was Avon Skin So Soft ffs!

She tried to give me a caution, she was told to go away in no uncertain terms, she has no right to give me anything let alone a caution.  the silly tame vet was told to F*8k off as well .  they wanted to know where i stabled her as they would like to remove her.

Now i know that animals get removed by the RSPCA and they are never seen again, she didn't get the information.

i saw her in asda the other day, she said she  would like to see the pony, and she said that when she found her she wold take her, i told her that if she ever set foot on my property she would prosecuted for trespass.

they are nothing but bullies with no powers in law

I think you could be right there, Annie. Surely if a decent RSPCA vet had seen the one in the news report, he would have realised what the problem was.

Herdy Girl

That's outrageous. Perhaps when you get vet out next ask them to give an opinion on her care / condition so you can flash it in her face and show you will fight any action in the courts.  You only need to glimpse some of what goes on the tv shows (do they think they show them in a good light?) to see how much leeway and 2nd/3rd chances they give to people and it is only the extreme cases they ever prosecute.

I've never given any money since i called to report a neighbour beating up a young dog. Heartbreaking to hear the howling. They never came round. Presume they only work 9-5 then?

As a matter of interest do the RSPCA have any jurisdiction (if you can call it that) in Scotland or does the SSPCA keep them at bay?

One thing, Avon skin so soft is widely used by peeps with sweet itch horses, so altho it sounds completely mad, that suggestion probably wasnt as mad as it sounds....altho I'm not sure whether it is quite as effective as it used to be as they changed the recipe a year or two back, but it's certainly still used.

RSPCA operates in England and Wales only

Thing is, Skin so Soft only lasts for about half an hour, whereas something like Mosiguard (lemon eucalyptus) lasts 8-10 hours.

So actually, it isn't the smartest recommendation and anyway, I get through gallons of Mosiguard just applying it to myself, let alone a horse!

Just read all of the thread..I was told recently by a very reliable, close to the institution person, that the SPCA are actually on a type of commission/target based system and where in the past they wanted to work with the owners of animals to get the best end result for all concerned they now look to prosecute.  Keeping livestock myself in different areas of Scotland I've come across different approaches by different regions, some want to help and work with you as there is no actual risk to the animals but some are on a PR exercise and want to be seen to punish the owners of the animals when there is no real concern in the first place.  The system is very dangerous and can put innocent people through a tremendous amount of stress, granted there are people out there who do abuse and neglect animals which appalling but there are others who are trying their best but are also fighting the do-gooders of this world.
