Title: Alamycin versus Pen and strep???
Post by: Ladygrey on June 24, 2013, 07:45:52 pm
Hi there

I am going to give a pig some antibiotics for reasons I wont put on the forums (sorry dont feel like arguments!)

I have both Alamycin and Pen and strep that I could use, But I have never really known the benefits/differences of each of them?

I know Alamycin you can inject less often, (was told by the vet) but then which one is stronger or more affective? and can they be used together?

Many thanks

Jess

Ask the vet that's what they're for.

Depends what you are treating for  ;). Probably best to have a chat with your vet as to which is best for wharever the problem is.
Pen and Strep is 1ml/25kg of bodyweight whereas Alamycin LA is 1ml/10kg so you need less Pen and strep per injection but if its Alamycin LA you have and not just Alamycin 10% then that is just a one off jab rather than a few days with Pen Strep  :).Would speak to vet though if you are not sure which to use

Thankyou very much! that clarifies it for me,

Vet had suggested treating with antibiotics, I then realised I had two different types and wandered what the differences were without having to ring up the vet at unsociable hours
