Title: Hen house
Post by: AndynJ on June 23, 2013, 09:35:09 am
Advice needed
We run almost 50 hens sell out of eggs daily within minutes, therefore thinking of moving up a little.
We have our Defra No. we already vaccinate & worm, we only sell at the gate.
We house in Brick barn for main flock and running and broody coops for the rare breeds, we need the barn back so,
Thinking of running 2 x 50 hybrid houses or should we just have 1 x 100 ?
I can build shed myself is there much saving ?

Hi, don't know much about poultry, but going on an experience of someone I know, I'd go for 2 houses - purely for the reason of bio-security ...

... 6 lots of rare breed chickens had to be destroyed, due to some infection (sorry can't remember what it's called) - brought in by a single young pullet  :o  horrible experience  :'(

2 pens and keep moving best layers into 1 then in spring mate the best 6 for new stock coming on and fade the not layers out .If you can get the Sussex D104 over 300 eggs in a season very good stock          http://www.johnstonspoultry.com/sussex.html (http://www.johnstonspoultry.com/sussex.html)

Thanks for the responses, we will be keeping our rare breed separate,
Thanks to VF for the link we will buy in hybrid stock as our current stock is mixed & fairly old.
