Title: Lump in udder. No blood in milk. Help!
Post by: Bumblebear on June 13, 2013, 08:29:20 pm
Before I make a panic call to the vet, I thought I would ask some advice on here.  Whilst milking Simone tonight (just now!) I found a smallish lump in one udder just near her teat.  There is no blood in the milk, no swelling outside the udder, it doesn't feel hot and although she's not too keen on my squeezing it, she doesnt kick out in pain or protest too much.  I did see a tiny pimple on the outside.  She's eating fine and seems fine in herself.

Could it be a reaction to a bite?  Mastitis?  Or I've just read something about calcium buildup (?) Any advice welcome.

I'd keep milking and keep an eye on it. Could be a midge bite, could be slightly mastitisy - close watch if she were mine, straight to the vet if any additional mastitis signs (any more discomfort, clots in the milk.....)

Have you tested the milk for mastitis?

I've done two slightly bizarre tests that the breeder said to do, and both tests come up negative.  She did mention calcium deposits or maybe that pimple is a bite.  Is there one kit you would recommend over another?  I've looked at the Ascott Dairy one but I'm not sure if it's a "use once" kit or multiuse, or if it has a use by date on it.

Must have been an insect bite thank goodness, as it's gone down now :)
