I got a phonecall today from someone looking for some weaners, I asked if it was Kunekunes or traditional breed pigs they were after and the reply I got almost had me stuck for words (almost  ;))

They said that they had to have the traditional breeds because they couldn't eat Kunekune. I asked why and expected the standard response of "they're too fatty" or "the meat isn't good" (getting ready to extol the virtues of the little guys  ;)) but no !
The reason they couldn't eat Kunekune was because the council Animal health inspector had told them it was illegal, because they are a minature breed  :o :o :o

I mean, really ? have any of you ever heard anything so ridiculous  ??? How on earth does someone who advises people for a living get it so, SO wrong ?  :rant: :rant: :rant:
I'm at the point of looking for the number to phone the council (not mine by the way) first thing on Monday to attempt to educate this 'official' a wee bit more  ::) If he's spouting stuff like this, heaven only knows what else he's telling folk  :o

Unbelievable. Having said that the knowledge and experience of a lot of people in officialdom does beggar belief sometimes.

I am never shocked at what total *rap!! some people spout...heard it from the best of them, some actualy believe what they say as well.....funny thing I never challenge them at the time but it boils  up in me as I know they are so wrong....stupid man or was it a women :innocent:

What a load of absoloute sh*te - very worrying though - let the Local Authority that employs that AH Inspector that he (gotta be a bloke  ;)  ) obviously hasn't had any training since 1992  :o   as the breed were imported in 1993 & the Maori's have been eating them for several centuries prior to that!  IDIOT!!!

I do think you need to follow this up. Bear in mind the buyers may have misunderstood though  ::)

Clearly the message needs correcting...  but the good news is, someone in officialdom does know that micropigs are illegal - and that's good, yeah?   I'd think the misunderstanding comes from also hearing that Kune Kunes are often known as / portrayed as micropigs.  You can see how they arrive at their incorrect conclusion.  An education campaign is required, Karen!

Eh! I've read all the debate about micropigs and I'm not for it in any way but that is truly news to me!

No No No BB, IMO a real pig is pink with black spots, but then we are all enthusiastic about our own preferred particular breeds ;D  and thats what makes us pig keepers a diverse bunch of characters, fiercely protective of our species.

No No No BB, IMO a real pig is pink with black spots, but then we are all enthusiastic about our own preferred particular breeds ;D  and thats what makes us pig keepers a diverse bunch of characters, fiercely protective of our species.

:thumbsup: Yup and that's exactly what each of these breeds needs to ensure they survive for the future.

There needs to be dedicated pig nuts like us that are out twice a day, every day in the wildest of weather and hardest conditions, midnight farrowings in sub-zero conditions and paying the feed bills to keep these wonderful breeds going.  :thumbsup:
I'm just a pig fan in general - can see pluses for each and every breed, they all need our help  :innocent:

 ;D   If this applies to pigs, then what about miniature breeds of anything!!  Not that there is much meat on a bantam, but all the same......
 
Anyway, one of my Kune Kunes is rather large, and would not be classed as miniature, but on the other end of the scale,Lucky is more in the league of micro pig, and  probably too small to eat anyway!!!

Just to remind everyone

The only pig to have is a large breed pig that is white in colour with a minimum of one distinct black spot. It should have lop ears which will almost cover the face when it reaches maturity.
