Hi, I have been told there are a few human medications that can be used on pet, dogs in my case, my eldest labrador often gets itchy this time of year and I am sure its to do with an allergy to grass or something as she has no fleas and the others are fine, one of her daughters also has an allergy but again only at this time of year, I did bath her last year with some of Plums Its Baaaaaaaa time dog soap and that helped so much..its so lovely I got mixed up and ended up using it all up myself :innocent:
I also find brushing her softly and regularly helped but know her daughter has antihistamine from the chemist rather than the expensive vet stuff...just want to double check as I know some stuff is very toxic and I do not want to harm my lovely girl, just stop her itch!!

My Jack Russell was prescribed Piriton for hayfever! They told me that it was the same stuff I take, so he has that now.
-
Piriton  is what the person I know gives her dog too so just wanted to double check...I do sometimes sucumb to hay fever, a few weeks ago I was terrible, think that was tree pollen but I cannot remember the medication I took that was OK as ALL the others do not suit me cause I am a sensitive person :innocent: THanks!!!!
-
We all take Piriton in this house! ;D (umm perhaps we are allergic to the house?)
-
Maybe :innocent: , my eldest daughter has some really bad reactions to things....mostly animals.......I always seem to get very runny nose and eyes when in a built up area....not sure if its deisle fumes as they actualy make me feel quite sick.......I have tested loads of different pills but forgot the ones that I found OK......the others made me drunk and sleepy......

Antihistamines are generally fairly safe - I have to take a citirizene tablet every morning for the rest of my life - I have perennial rhinitis, caused originally by cat allergy in a rented house we had between a house sale and purchase.
-
I think a lot of people get sensitive to cats, I think I am OK, althoug a prime example tonight, after a late walk we went to a drive in Mc D's and was behind some one with the stinky diesel engine and I nearly passed out, it was horrid,
I am OK but was really bad a few weeks back, eyes streaming etc, I am sure its willow or something...I shall buy some Piriton for Isaly and hope she stops her scratching
-
Yes Piriton or other brands of same medication are fine for dogs - helps with itching due to pollen etc. Can't remember the dosage though.
-
I will try the child dose.......the Vet said it could take numerouse tests etc to find the cause....I am now sure its grass pollen.......she has been fine until fairly recently, thankseveryone

Piriton from our vets is a matter of pence, whereas hayfever tablets at the supermarket always seem very expensive. Our vets sell it in tubs of 500.
-
Our vet is usualy cheap too...maybe I should ask them for some....I was going to check the active ingredients and see if I could find another cheap brand but its not going to be too expensive!
-
Also - medicated Optrex which is available over the pharmacist counter can be used if they get sore eyes. You have to lie to the pharmacist though and say it is for a 'hooman'!! ;)

Our homeopathic vet used to prescribe piriton for our dogs but the dosage is different to humans so you may want to check with your vet first. I'm sure she said they need a larger dose than us.
Last year one of our sheps had an allergic reaction to something. Her face and muzzle started to swell alarmingly and I was worried about her airway so I gave her an antihistamine and made an emergency appointment at the vet. By the time we got there 20 minutes later, there was no sign of any swelling and we were really embarassed. However, when I told the vet what I had given her, she nearly had a fit! This was not the homeopathic vet.

I assume this was a highly diluted version of piriton?, like no parts piriton and a gazillion parts water that once looked at some piriton through a window on a dark rainy night
(Thinks to himself, "hope I've got the right definition of homeopathic otherwise I'll look a right idiot, again")

I think you got that right, Alistair

Just an update...I bought some stuff thats not Piriton but AllerTek with the active ingredients being
Cetirizine dihydrochloride...I keep reading that is OK but still a tad concerned......is it OK? I will ask the vet as well...although she is not bad I do not want her to get worse and a point of sore skin..still think its pollen from grass as its not long flared up again and its only one of my dogs. I now am going to attemt to bath them ALL!!!! WET WET WET...comes to mind!! :innocent:
-
Try shampoo with oatmeal or aloe in it, really good for sore skin, I use these on sensitive skin dogs ll the time, and make sure you get all the shampoo off the one with the problem
-
Just showered them, well 2 out of the 3, used dog shampoo but I honestly found the best one was one Plumbs made, it was with goat milk and I could hold the bar and rub them.....I will give the dog with the itch some extra fish oil, we often add scrambled egg or pilchards etc.....she looks OK but I can see she keeps itching!! bedding is on the line too and I have just commented on my Facebook that now I am more wet and hairy than they are.......just got to wash our Yellow Lab, she appears not to want a shower but enjoyed her early mud bath on our walk!! :innocent:

Citirizene is a strong AH - that is what I have for perennial rhinitis. I would check with your vet first as there may be different strengths
-
I have some excellent solid soap for dogs with sensitive skin that I got from Crufts last year - when I get home I will look at the wrapper and give you their website address.

Solid bar is so much easier, you can rub it on them....I did get my dogs bar accidently mixed in with my stuff and used it on myself.....I had a lovely shinny coat and wet nose for weeks :innocent:

But Sandy it was a bit embarrassing when you ran up to everyone sniffing their crotch and don't even mention the times you got cold water chucked over you for humping in the park , that poor park keeper will never be the same again !

I often forget and think of the dogs as my children.......as long as I do not start eating thier food of pooing in the garden...I suppose I am still human
