Title: For Sale; Ouessant intact breeding ram
Post by: Poppy140-1 on May 27, 2013, 05:02:19 pm
I have an intact Ouessant ram for sale used this year for breeding however I will be keeping one of his daughters - so will either need to move him on or castrate the poor lad! He is extremely tame lives a rub under his chin.  We are based in Staffordshire - any questions gladly replied - many thanks :

Hi Rich yes he is registered with the Ouessant sheep society, unfortunately i cant upload a photo, stating the file is too large! He is on the preloved website if you search under ouessant there is 3 photos attached.

Aaah thank you, yes we do look after them, they are more like pets really, I have 4 ladies and Tom (the ram) we have bred this year and received 2 ewe and 2 ram lambs, one of the rams and ewe lambs have sold, however i'm going to keep the other 2.  If you know of anyone wishing to purchase him please let me know.

Ooops apologies Val I thought you were Richmorpygmygoats, such a novice!!

May I ask how do you spot a 'good' ram, I know about the horns needing to be not too close to the head, do you have any other tips, at the momemt he looks like an enormous bumble bee, needs a good cut!

I was thinking of purchasing an unrelated ram lamb this year (caramel) so it would be useful to know what im looking for.

I currently have 2 caramel girls, hetty and Barbara, and 2 black girls, daisy and mable! Im hoping a caramel ram will give more caramel genes in the breeding, but you never know!
regards Karen

LOL.....
Good ram....
Long back, nice and chunky, leg at each corner and not flimsy and cow hocked!
Horns are a problem with lots of the British bred Ouessants, many are too close to the head...What is his parentage?
Jaw....check for over shot jaws....very prevalent seemingly in the Noisette (caramel).
Wool - very important and should be soft and not 'hairy'
Very very difficult to find a good ram.....Rick up in Cumbria has Merinos who carries gene for Caramel and grey. He also has a grey ram bred by me and both are now reg with breed society.
