Title: Mobile chicken house
Post by: Womble on May 20, 2013, 11:00:49 pm
Hi folks,

I just thought you might be interested to see some pics of our new mobile chicken house. This is going to be used for table birds and possibly also turkeys.

The idea was to make cleaning really easy, so I covered the floor with lino and cut a trap door in the back corner so I can just hinge the perches up out of the way and sweep the dirty bedding straight out, rather than having to shovel it up.

What do you reckon?  Anything I've missed?  (There are some more details and pics here (http://anoutdoorlife.wordpress.com/2013/05/20/mobile-chicken-coop/) by the way).

Cheers!

Womble.

Looks really neat to me - like the idea of the lino going up the walls since that bottom corner is always the most awkward to get clean. The wheels are great to - I guess you can pull it manually or by vehicle? We've got one on skids but I don't think we'll ever be able to move it realistically. Could you not have weld mesh over the window? Then you'd not need to worry about the ventilation at either end so much? Is this the first of many?

That looks great! The trap door idea is really good and the lino will be easy to clean. I guess the only thing will be keeping an eye on it incase it starts to lift and become a home for redmite?

That is genius!  I am making my chicken house mobile - but it will be more of a "sedan chair" mobility!

Hehe, that makes me wonder how you'd live in that and muck out through the hole...  ;D

Great job, though.

Thanks for all the compliments folks. I've decided not to use it for poultry after all, but am going to hire it out at weekends as a compact and bijou holiday caravan instead  ;D .

The base was a very old 6x4 box trailer, so the bits of metal that had been in contact with the wood were very rusty where the wood had rotted and held water against the metal. The rest of it was pretty good though, so it was easy enough to grind it back to good solid prior to rust treatment, welding and painting.

Those ventilation grilles are very cheap to buy, and I prefer them to just holes with weldmesh because they keep out driving rain / snow, but at the same time allow for good air circulation.

It would tip up if you stood right at the back, but in reality it's small enough that I won't actually need to stand inside to clean it, since I can reach right to the back with a hose and brush. Well, that's the theory at least.

HGL - I'll try to get a photo with either Mrs Womble or a team of ducks saddled up to pull it along later  ;D .
