Hi all.
I have been prompted to see if there is any interest in a meet up for any smallholders / TAS people in the Carmarthen area.
I need to know who is interested, and what times of year/day they would like to meet. On one suggestion was that later in year autumn/winter is better ... but I wonder if those with lots of stock would find this difficult.? Please get in touch..
Linda

Me, me, me, please
-
I think I prompted the suggestion and I only suggested later in the year because people tend to be busy with stuff in summer evenings whilst once the nights start to draw in people may be more likely to come along.
But I'm up for it if I'm around.

Ooh! count me in.
I must admit at this time of year with long eve's (and dry weather :excited: ) I'm finding there's so must to do that I don't know wether I'm coming or going, but I would take and afternoon / evening off to meet up with everyone.
How you folks find the time to keep up with TAS AND run a smallholding I don't know.

Defo not an evening for me :tired: :tired: . I'm so bloomin knackered by the time I finish I just fall asleep. Afternoon would be good though :farmer:
-
Ok sounds like an afternoon meet up then ...... how would a Thursday pm suit? Early pm (say 2pm) so you can go back to do things ... or later maybe 3.30 so most jobs done first .... and looking at locations we are still looking at close to Carmarthen as a central location.
-
fingers crossed..we might make next years ..if all goes well ... carmarthenshire is coming out on top for destinations
-
Thursdays would be OK for me - except this coming Thursday (9th) - as i'm already booked for something else.
-
I'm about 40 mins away from Carmarthen town (I'm in Caerphilly), but I'd love to join in. Could wangle an afternoon meeting; evenings might be more difficult. Keep me posted!
-
The more the merrier... :excited: How about 6th June (to avoid school holidays and give time for anyone else to join in? Still need that venue ...
-
6th June works for me. How about the place that Henchard mentioned at Nantgaredig (may have got the spelling wrong there)

I'm hoping to get along. I only suggested Wright's for a handful of people. Not sure they would have space for 10/15 people.
http://www.wrightsfood.co.uk (http://www.wrightsfood.co.uk)
If I have time I'll nip round and ask them but I'm off to Ireland tomorrow.
-
Yep, I can do 6th June and 2pm would be brill and Wright's sounds like a perfect venue  .
-
6th June 2pm it is then. We'll just see if Henchard manages to get us that venue .... looks like about 6-8 of us so far.
Linda

Ok Just been round to Wrights and they have kindly offered to reserve the 'bottom room' there (at no charge) for us at 2pm on 6th June. It is in they diary but we need to confirm.
The room will comfortably hold 10/12 after that it might get a tad 'cosy'.
Can I suggest that someone starts a list of confirmed attendees?
I will be coming probably plus OH
I'm away to Ireland tomorrow but happy to confirm with Wrights on my return
Their Facebook page is here

Yes that postcode is correct.the A40 between Carmarthen and Llandeilo. At Nantgaredig head North on the Brechfa road – and it is on the right before you reach the brow of the hill. Parking is a tad limited so some may need to park by the turning in. Also I'm not sure if dogs are allowed; so dog owners may have to leave them in their cars
-
:excited: looking forward to meeting everyone .... was quite surprised to see the meeting mentioned in Country Smallholding mag (thanks Liz).
Don't suppose anyone coming has any ducks they are looking for a new home for.... runners or KC. ?
-
Called in at Wright's today just to confirm that all is ok with the room. All ok.
However, I did ask about dogs and whilst they don't mind them on the outside patio area they don't allow them in the inside part of the restaurant/shop.
See you Thursday

Hi all,
Been just so busy with animals, bees, garden and daughters wedding etc etc. have not had much time lately to visit the forum so only just seen the post. Would love to make it on Thurs with my other half who grew up in Nantgaredig. If there is still room I will confirm later when other half returns from afar.

Would anyone coming to the meet like two freshly cut cuttings wrapped in damp kitchen towel in a poly bag so you can root them and have
Chou D ' Aubenton ( sp ).
Better known as " Perennial Kale " .
It grows well , all year round very hardy down to about minus 15 o C even ,lower if slightly protected , yet it's sweet and tender when boiled , used as sag aloo , bubble & squeak etc. all year round if you get you planting /cuttings spaced out . Chooks love it so do pigs it's a brassica like cabbages
Distance between plants best at about 1.78 metre ( six feet ) .
As for all brassica once a plant is removed practice crop rotation of at least three years gap to prevent any disease build up in the ground .
Once your cuttings are rooted and grown to about 2 foot across make more of your own cuttings and grow in big patches for house and stock consumption.
They like well aged manured soil that stays reasonably moist in hot ( did I actually say ... Hot :relief: ) for best results.
Drop me a PM so I can cut the right number of cutting on Thursday morning )
Keep taking cuttings at the end of Aug to ensure new plants the next year and when they have got going give to old plants to the stock
-
Have a great meet up guys....fingers crossed we will be along next year, and must say a massive thankyou to one person for a fantastic offer....we will be up later this month, looking.... :excited:

6.25 hrs to go now, safe journeys to all :yippee: must go water the veggie garden :garden: all this :sunshine: is drying my seedlings out.
-
love the count down! 3 hours to go :excited:
-
Have a great time! A group photo would be nice. :)
-
It would be nice to see some pictures and put some faces to names ...I agree with Dan
-
Well I did take a camera but some escaped before I could get a group shot. So here are some, (but by no means all) members at the meeting. Bob Dylan is an honorary member!
I think the meeting proved generally useful and everyone now knows about what others have to offer in the way of skills or potential help and assistance. Another meeting is planned for later in the year (September) probably in a pub where people can chat more easily with each other.
Something like that anyway!
I'm sure individuals will fill you in as to who is who!
-
Just got back from the meet. It was great to meet everyone and hopefully It can become a regular thing. :excited: :excited:
I would just like to say thank you to backinwellies for suggesting the meet, and henchard for arranging the venue which was lovely (could have done with softer seats though lol :-J )
Looking forward to the next meet already.
Lea
-
Its a shame I missed it and very unusual for me to be out elsewhere. I will definitely be up for the nexxt meeting.
-
Yep - great to meet with some other TASers now were back down here
I second the thanks to backinwellies & henchard
Looking forward to the next time :excited:
Anyone else going to the pig sale tomorrow?
 :pig:
-
Ditto Beewyched (love the T-shirt  ) and littlelugs. Was a good meet and a good venue with good company. Catch you all again in September.
Miss Piggy - we bought some bread too - the Spelt bread, cor - delish.....but my goodness, expensive :o .
Got back to do the usual rounds of feeding up, bedding down, sheep counting and checking and then indoors to stuff sausages - as in MAKE sausages, not stuff as in EAT :roflanim: .
Cheers all

-
Oh Henchard - just realised you caught me stuffing my face :-[
-
And you seem to have caught me scowling (don't remember doing that - must've been listening really hard ;D ).
I'm the baldy bloke in the white t shirt BTW - the one who looks a bit like a stunted Salman rushdie.
marcus
Oh, and I'd like to add my thanks to henchard & backinwellies for organizing  too.
-
It was great to meet up and to be able to put faces to names and to hear more about everyone's challenges, achievements and goals. A big thanks to the organisers and to all for making the effort to travel, we look forward to keeping in touch and meeting up again.
Hope you enjoy the bread Mandy, yes it was expensive so hoping it tastes as good as it looks.
I attach a photo of the two young ladies we spoke about. Shame we didn't get a full group picture but being camera shy quite pleased I'm hidden behind others in this photo.
Anne and David
-
Great to meet everyone and thank you to you all for taking the lovely sunny afternoon to come along and sit on hard chairs for 2 hours.
Glad the camera missed me!
Love the picture of the girls Anne, look forward to meeting them on Sunday
Linda
....
-
Yes, looking forward to Sunday Linda, we can have a proper natter
-
Thanks to all who organised and attended .
It certainly makes you realize the vast variation in skills and backgrounds of the people who are small holders , potential small holders & former small holders .
I thoroughly enjoyed being with you all .
Ps
I'm the " Portly :roflanim:" guy with the watch on his left wrist
Plantoid a.k.a Cloddopper and also Dave Gould
-
I'm sorry I couldn't make it, I will have to make a concerted effort to be available for the next one, it sounds like it was a great success. to those who organised it all.
Perhaps for the next one some of us who are quite far away can car pool? I have 7 seater mini van to ferry my kids round in so I could take a few :)
-
Sounds like you all had a good time ...............jealous now ;D
Eck
-
I'm jealous too. I tried to set up a meet for Shropshire and area but, despite lots of people saying they would be interested, no one actually could come.
-
I am still up for a meet up in shrops MWoG, sorry I haven't updated that thread recently, I'm entering a mega busy period at the moment, i have something going on every week until mid July it seems! But I would still be up for it :knit:
-
I hope everyone's had the email today with all our details, I finally got round to typing it all up, but finger errors and spell check meant I had to re-send it. Let me know if you don't have it, I'll try again!
-
-
Hi  , not received yet.
Anne
-
Will try you one more time Anne :-[
-
Thanks Helen received the second one :excited:
-
Good news ..
One thing we talked about was getting our geographic location some where near to our name so that others in the area might be able to get to know us or come over for a cuppa etc.
I've been editing my profile and adding a picture and discovered if you click on your own name you can go into editing your profile and in there is a box for you to enter your location ..
You can see that not only have I put in my general area location , I've also given the first bit of my post code .
I've also placed a map indicator marker near to where I live, but not exactly in place for obvious security reasons .
OK, OK , I'm a bit slow ..I've just noticed most of you have done it already :farmer:
-
This will teach me read ALL the posts.........
I missed this one and would have liked to come and meet you all - I do know Blinkers
If you can put me on the list for next time, though I may have to beg a lift as my knee is not up to driving at the moment.
Thanks
-
Shame you missed us .... ferret keeper has a list of contacts if you are interested
