You tell me, we do get both species.
I'm referring to the bird on the left, the other one is a hen Siskin.

My vote is redpoll.
Funnily enough, we got one in the garden at the weekend, which is a first.

I would definitely vote for redpoll too - we had our first this year too, was around for about a week.

I think Redpoll too ;)

Yes - redpoll. I've never seen one - lucky you. Whereabouts are you?

The Lleyn Peninsular.

AHA - first time ever a female Common Redpoll appeared on our seed feeder this morning  . What a cute little bird - somehow I thought they were bigger than that.

Hi, redpoll. We get lots here in our garden near Bethesda.

Lesser redpoll (smaller than "common" redpoll aka mealy redpoll which is a winter visitor and less common!). Differentiated from Linnet by the small black bib and lighter beak.
Been researching this as we get both and, recently the L.redpoll has been a common visitor to our bird table. They seem to be having a good year and there is a profusion around.
For the female of the species, IIRC, L.Redpoll has a wee red hat (a jaunty red beret the wife tells me  ) but linnet female doesn't have a red beret ;D .

yes looks like a male redpole, where I live I have a lot of long grass and get them in massive flocks in the summer they join up with thousands of goldfinches, sparrows, greenfinches, chaffinches and yellow hammers - just georgous and the sound - amazing. They love thistle heads ...yes i have plenty of them too:) Its winter here now, and most of the seed eaters come for food I put out, but for some reason they and the goldfinches dont, preferring perhaps the pine forest. But there was a goldfinch eating Nepeta (catnip) seedheads the other day out my window, its nice that they have discovered the new plants im bringing in- that diversifies their food source. I could watch them for hours! But have to get back to my desk.. Im also feeding waxeyes and bellbirds, and tui -natives that eat nectar and have incredible songs, so am running out into the cold wet misery every few hours to top up the sugar water!
