Title: Need help poorly pig
Post by: Liam_86 on April 25, 2013, 09:43:37 pm
One of my pigs has started being poorly, hes wretching like he wants to be sick and panting a lot! Hes off his food and stopped mixing with the others, been like this since 2pm today. Someone suggested pnuemonia so hes had a shot of penicillin! Anyone any ideas before the vet come tomorrow?

Always take a pig's temperature whenever something's wrong just in case it's gone through the roof, the vet will need to know how urgent it is.

Has he been wormed? There's a worm called lungworm.
Any wheezing?

Keep him in the shade in the meantime. Good luck.  :fc:

Have they eaten something they shouldn't?
Wretching isn't a sign of pneumonia, sounds more like poisoning or stomach upset ???

Make sure they drink even if you have to syringe or use a water bottle to get them to drink, ask vet for electrolytes to rehydrate.

Hope its nothing too serious.

Hi all

Just to let you know, it was pneumonia. I found an old man in the pub who used to farm pigs for about 50 years. He took one look and said its definately pneumonia, he told me to give them some penicillin.

I got some pen and strep (usually given to cows) and gave him 5ml and all is now wel!!!

He's running around, eating and generally getting up to mischief.

So im now a farmer/Vet

Thanks for the help

You'll need more than one shot of P&S to clear an infection. Vets normally recommend three to five consecutive days. There are long-acting antibiotics which only take one shot, but P&S always needs a few repeated doses.

Just to back up TT pen and strep needs a minimum of a 5 day course  can be used with noradine 24 to boost it
