I've finally been sent a copy of the pedigree certificate for the OSB boar I have been lumbered with. It says that he is ear notched for his ID. Now I might be a bit thick here as I have no experience with notching and have never had a notched pig. So, if on the certificate it says that Rockys ear number is XYZ/13, he should have notches in his ear to represent the number 13, right? The only notch I can see is on his outer right ear at the base which I think means 1. Or have I got this completely wrong?
God, what a mess! >:(

I think the notching for osb is the same as Berkshire. If so 13 will be a notch at the bottom of the outer side of the right ear [10] and a notch at the top of the outer side of the left ear [3]. Left and right is standing in front and looking at the pig.

Trouble with notching is that over time they tend to pick up a few extra ones from scrapping over dinner etc.

There is an explanation of the notching system on the 'Identification' section of the OSB website.

Aah, OK, so left and right is standing looking at the pig, not actual pig right and left. Phew :relief: ! That makes me feel somewhat better, at least Rocky has a clear 10 and there is what could be a slight nobble at 3 to make up the 13 (using ones imagination there!) Thanks for clearing that up!
