Title: Land based studies petition
Post by: Ina on April 22, 2013, 02:55:33 pm
I think this is quite important - message from Government: land based studies don't count... I.e., exactly what I've been experiencing over the last years - don't study agriculture, horticulture etc, because that shows that you are just an ignorant farmer and no matter how many degrees you have in those subjects, you aren't worth anything! (And then, of course, they complain there's nobody left who can produce food...)

Totally back all you said   ....   a BSC 2.2  but in agriculture ..... so what do I know?  well  I've studied chemistry, biology, geology, management, accounting, statistics   as well as all the direct agriculture subjects all at degree level ....   but apply for a job and you might as well have left school at 16!!

However I did teach at an ag college for 20 years , 8 of these teaching disaffected 14 - 16 year olds with huge success .... these (mostly) lads really blossomed being taught through the medium of agriculture and horticulture ... their maths and english improved beyond expectations.

The future of our food and landscape depends on education and promotion of agric/hortic education from secondary upwards.

Ina .... I tried the petition but the link doesn't seem to be working

Thanks for pointing that out... But the fact that graduates (and post grads) from agricultural background count as nothing is valid up here, too!

Actually, I'm not sure what the position is with education in land based subjects IS in Scotland although I would like to find out. The Curriculum for Excellence has "food" thread running through from 5-16, I think but I'm not sure if any schools in Scotland offer any land based qualifications at Standard Grade or Higher.

Obviously, the colleges (SRUC now) offer from NC to degree.

However, I know a man who WILL know  ;)
