Hi,
My 9 year old son is wanting to start selling bantams. I waswondering if you have to register as a business oris there anything that needs to be done. He wants to start small, just selling a few.
Any advice would be great.

I wouldnt worry too much until you get Alan Sugar knocking on your door offering your son a job.

Just go for it a great thing for a the young fella to do, What kind of bantams does he fancy I keep Wyandottes very pretty in a lot of different colours and can sell well at times, best of luck whatever he picks.

Hi bigchicken, at the moment we have some Pekin cross that he can start to raise some funding for more chickens.
He is wanting to breed Sablepoots.
We ave a variety at the moment nd he loves them all. His favorite is his dutch bsntam.

I wouldn't worry about it as I am sure he will be under the radar, and not sure he would be doing anything wrong anyway.
My 5 year old son is getting some LS bantam hatching eggs tomorrow to hatch out himself. He's going to keep some and sell any spare. I've told him that I will help him look after them but he is responsible for them and if I have to feed them etc, when he should be doing it, he is going to have to pay me! lol

Good luck Helen! My seven year old is still very hit and miss with caring for his lizards - can't imagine my five year old sticking to it for more than a couple of days!
As for registering, no, I can't see he'd need to. He's going to be well underneath the first tax band which is really where he needs to declare anything. If he does register as a sole trader it means he'd have to do a tax return which would be overkill.

Thinking of paper lads I'm sure kids can earn a small amount before having to declare anything. Good luck to him.
If he gets any Wyandotte bantams I'm looking for eggs in a month or two

He is pretty good and comes out before school to feed everything, let them out etc. Time will tell when he has sole responsibility, although i did say i would help him a bit.

Thanks all. He is prdtty good sith our othrr chickens, helps clean them out on the weekend and feeds them the wheat after school and does egg collection.
The first thing he is saving for is an incubator, they seem so expensive. And wetrying to keep set up costs down.
The main reason I asked about registring was my wife is brilliant at making cakes and cupcakes and would love to sell a few more than she does but is worried about making money on them as she is not registred and has not had ojr kitchen checked out. She does it mainly for friends and charges them cost. Drives me crazy as I think she should charge for her time.

Just on the cakes, I've a couple of friends who are just starting up with the same thing. There are a few books on Amazon about how to start a cake business so I imagine they'll tell her whether she needs a specialised kitchen (imagine not) etc.

Good luck to your son with selling his bantams.
I love my bantams ......hatch some under the broodies every year, and sell eggs from them. Always look forward to the eggs hatching,and seeing what colours I have.

Good luck with the chooks. My 13 year old son grows a wide variety of chilli plants from seed and sells the plants at the local farmers market. He keeps a stock back and will sell the chillis from them later in the year. This year he's having a go at making various chilli related products and selling them too. Nobody official knows and my boy puts some of what he earns into buying more seed.

Excellent!! I love seeing enterprising youngsters :) My 9 yr old recently got taken to see the headteacher after she was rumbled selling lipbalms that she'd snaffled out of my shop and was pocketing the takings!! had to smile though ;)
As for the cake making, I would seriously contact trading standards for your area - there is a hefty fine is someone is caught making and selling without a food hygiene certificate. It might be ok while your OH is not profitting but if she turns it into a business, please do - I know because its been an issue a mile up the road from here...

Thanks all for the encouragement, he is very keen. I am hoping the cost of the incubator doesn't put him off.
