What type of coat did he grow in the winter? Ours has remained very fine, wondering if this is typical for the breed?
What was he crossed with?

William was crossed with an Arab so had very fine skin and needed rugging all year round. Not sure if pure breds get thick coats like other natives as Ireland is not as cold as we are.

I had a pure bred connemmara pony as a child, she was great, her coat was very good...we didn't rug her in the winter and she wintered out well (often too well)
