Title: Staggers
Post by: Pasture Farm on April 17, 2013, 09:52:19 am
On 14th Aplil i noticed two of my Lley ewes both with twins struggling to stand on their feet, mainly front feet, buckling under at the joint. A quick word with my vet and he suspected Grass Staggers. On the 15th i injected under the skin 75ml of magniject9 as advised by the vet. I moved them with their lambs into the barn with fresh good hay and feeding them twice a day with coarse mix, today one of the ewes is showing signs of improvement but still not good the other is still struggling to stand. I was wondering how long it can last? If i should give more magniject if so how much? is hay and feed ok or do they need to be on grass?  Many thanks in advance

I suggest contacting your vet again, as he'll know both the set up on your farm and what the hypomagnesaemia challenge has been like locally this year and be able to advise the best course of action.

I'd stick a couple of hi-mag buckets out with the rest of the ewes pronto if you haven't already.

And give them some calcium aswell incase it's that causing it.
