The council provide us with a fox proof waste bin where the handel folds forward, locking the bin, but the foxes know how to get it open so I thought I would try something else.
I have used a metal dustbin with one of those elasticated rope things attached to the side handles and through the handle on the lid. The elastic is quite tight but still the fox is getting the lid off.
Anyone got a suggestion?

Locked shed? I'm amazed to hear that the fox is getting the lid off even with the bungee cord. That's how we secure our bins so I am concerned to hear that method isn't fox-proof.
-
My gran would have said " she should have used stronger elastic "
Are you sure it's a fox , not a badger ? they are stronger.

Funny how foxes like yourside of valley/ I leave out plastic bags of rubbish without trouble so far (should have kept quiet I'm sure!
Sounds like job for man with a gun to me!

Not sure of the design but could you modify the council bin to be able to be able to put a padlock on? Like drill a hole in the handle orsomething just an idea?

New dustbin

Linda, the man with a gun has just got a mum with 5 big babies. As you don't have any I will willingly send mine your way ;D

does it come free with a dozen eggs!?! ... have you got eggs? could do with some
-
Only got half a dozen at the moment. Should have a dozen by tomorrow if you want them.
We will be out until later in the day though as we are due to pick up out GOS weaners from Mandy.
Sat morning might be a better bet if you are free. You can have a look at the weaners at the same time.

You can get bins with clip lids, I think places like countrywide do them.

That looks to be just the job and not too expensive either
thanks foobar

I don't know about foxes, but it took one of those bins with clips and a strong bungee to hold the clips shut to stop our naughty and greedy GSD x collie raiding our dustbin. But that combination did work.
Or you can try what my dad did with a neighbouring marauding cat when I was a kid. We had the old metal dustbins, and the cat could get the lid off. We'd hear the clatter and the cat would be in the bin, raiding. ::)
Dad sat in wait, shovel at the ready. He took the lid off to make it easier for the cat to jump into the 1/4-full bin, in which tasty fishy morsels wafted appealing scents...
The cat duly appeared and jumped in the bin. Dad whanged the bin with the shovel with all his might. It was Tom and Jerry Live - a star-shaped legs, tail and spiky haired creature, accompanied by a night-rending scream, appeared as if fired out of the bin, for a split second was static in spiky terror a foot above the rim, then it disappeared in an instant, never to be seen in our garden again.
For a while I thought the three of us would end ourselves laughing. I've tears in my eyes now. :roflanim: :roflanim:

Sally, I just wish I could do that with Mr fox but he is too quick for me.

Pop river screw/nut & bolt on four 1 " staples from a hasp and staple set arrangenemt and run a long thin chain through them and the lid handle so it make a sort of X and use a stong loaded carabiner type link to fasten it in place .
Or do as my neighbour down the road does . They have a 4 mm guage 40 mm square weld mesh galve wire cage that takes three dustbins set on six hollow concrete blocks . It has a framed hinge lid with a prop open stay tow front face batwing access doors , it's closed with a hasp & staple and a spring link carabiner.
I like , it for the wind does not blow it away and the bins are kept out by the road frontage

All sounds a bit council proof too though to me!
-
I forgot ...... they are .....you have to have the ties of the bins by 07.30 hrs on bin day .
-
Well, I bought the bin suggested by foobar but it turns out it isn't fox proff either. Got up this morning to find the rubbish all over the garden again :(
The bin has been out there for less than a week so it hasn't taken foxy long to learn what to do.
He has tipped ths bin over and then has undone the clips. I am going to put some heavy rocks in the bottom so that maybe he can't knock it over and hence won't be able to undoe the clips :fc:
-
Good strong bungee strap across the clips ;)
-
Sally I had a bungee strap across the other bin and somehow the fox managed to get it off.
Actually I thought OH had forgotten to put it on so the next night I made certain it was fixed tight and foxy still managed to get into the bin.
-
Time to put a foxtrap up with some tasty rubbish in ??? , maybe?
-
Anke I think you are right. I will have to look up where to get one from
-
Find out who your local gamekeeper is and he should lend you one , bait it with an old smelly piece of fish ... :fc: :fc:

I looked up the price of fox traps and they are very expensive so I might have to try your suggestion.
Having said that I think I might just have out foxed Mr Foxy.
He/she gets into the bins by knocking them to the ground and can then undo the bungee ropes or clips. I have now put 2 breeze blocks into the bottom of the bin so he can't knock it over. This morning the overlap of bin bag was shredded to bits but foxy hadn't managet to get in ;D

:gloomy: poor my Fox can't feed his babies :innocent:

If you ask around, someone will have one. Gamekeper will definitely have one. We borrowed one last year after we lost a lamb, but didn't catch anything.
-
2 of us have borrowed traps - between us 7 foxes less within a 50 metre stretch of lane....baited with some of the dead hens left to us by mr fox and then a deer head (also 'lent' by the gamekeeper).
-
Just been pairing up lambs & mums and a big fox was marching through the tup field, next to where the lambs are... :o , clapped my hands and he was off...not that it makes any difference, hopefuly the lambs are all fit and healthy (at the moment)...
-
Time for a gun.. They are fox proof :innocent:
