Title: Garlic - legalities for sale?
Post by: MumaJ on April 02, 2013, 08:08:22 pm
I'm new,  have no land yet, other than garden. and just doing a load of research and working toward The Dream...

I want to plant some garlic among other things, but what I'd like to know is where do I buy garlic and other seeds that are okay to resell???

Or am I over thinking it? If I buy the seeds and garlic etc they are mine to reproduce as I wish etc

As far as I know there are no special legalities for garlic. You can just buy it from garden companies like you would with seeds, seed potatoes, onion sets etc. and therefore it's yours to resell if you want (particularly if you're just selling it from the garden gate - not sure whether you have to have food hygiene certificates for bigger scale production).

If you have vampires nearby they might try and take you to court other than that I don't think any problem other than those mentioned above

The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight is great for varieties of garlic, and those suitable for growing in Britain, and for bulk buys as well as smaller quantities of garlic.  There are sure to be other similar large specialist suppliers.  Once you have your initial stock you can easily grow your own extras to plant the following year.  By then selecting the best bulbs to replant you will slowly develop varieties adapted to your conditions.

It is worth investigating the seed companies for veg seed, as some of them will supply in bulk to businesses and allotment societies at a fair saving.
What a good idea to do your initial research now so you are all prepared to start once you get your land.

Thanks for the info, I have heard of the garlic farm on isle of white. Great idea, I'll contact them.

Well I'm slightly addicted to research as it is, I can barely buy a lip balm without looking into it first. But yes once we get going I want to be bang on it and on the right side of rules and regulations.
