Title: Hi. From some soon to be suffolkers!
Post by: MumaJ on April 02, 2013, 07:49:32 pm
H everyone,

My husband and I are in the army. Starting research now for when we leave to have a smallholding in Suffolk that is sustainable and primarily veg and pigs. (Possibly start with a common breed and move in to rare ones) Organic free range yadda yadda.

Any advice welcome, we are keep gardeners and that's about it, hoping to gain some work experience at local farms (once we move again in a few months)

Any little gems, things you wished you knew or advice you got that helped you when you were at this stage would be fab. Xx

Hiya! I think you've got the right idea about getting some experience - or just walk round a few smallholdings having a chat. We did just that before we started here and it really helped to see what could be done and very inspiring to meet people who could actually make the whole thing work.

If you're in one of the bits of Suffolk that's not too far from Cambridge, then you'd be more than welcome for a walk, a chat and a cuppa here.

Welcome from West Suffolk. Like benkt says you are more than welcome for a walk round, chat and coffee if you're in our neck of the woods
Good luck

Hi from the Limousin but I did live in Suffolk ( just).
If you are after keeping pigs as above then maybe investigate how and what to plant then store over winter for the pigs. You will have to cook up their spuds so maybe investigate how and where you will do that ( an outdoor kitchen could be valuable). Also - neighbours with orchards and a few chestnut or acorn trees could help you. We spend an age collecting fruit and nuts and the cellar has to be filled with swede, carrots and spuds.
Hope all goes well for you !
