Title: Chihuahua gone AWOL again !
Post by: sokel on March 19, 2013, 01:30:00 pm
She is doing my head in !
One of the visiting Chihuahuas  has a litter of puppies at the moment 3 1/2 weeks old and mum has gone awol yet again
She has always done it even when she is at home, she would much rather be out hunting that sitting at home in front of the fire.
For the first week after the birth she was the devoted mother ,couldn't stay away from them for more than a few minutes at a time.
gradually her old ways have kicked in and this is the second time she has gone missing since Saturday.
yesterday she was missing for 3 hrs and came back dragging a dead rabbit  into the house :o
She has been gone for over an hour now and still no sign of her. She will be up the back field where all of the rabbits are
I have shouted but cant get up there because the snow is too deep where as she can run on the top of it being only 1.4kg in weight !

A dog which won't come back can be a nightmare!! (tell me about it  ::) ::) )
I do hope the pups haven't inherited this trait ( I will reserve any more comments on this one  :innocent: :innocent: ).
I also hope there are no sheep in the field where she's rabbiting.

Poor you, what a worry, I had no idea that Chihuahuas had such hunting instincts, mind you, to her she is out providing for her family bless her  :innocent: .
Just hope she is back soon, can you make it more secure when she goes out? Years ago we had a dog that used to go off when she had pups and come back with builders packed lunches, that was us childrens fault at the time for leaving gates open!!!!

She is 200% with all livestock, its only Rabbits and rats she has a thing about . She never goes off our 22 acres anyway, infact we know she heads straight up into the top back field where all of the rabbit warrens are , probably my fault as when the weather is good i walk all of the dogs up there
she arrived home at 2.20pm as though nothing was wrong

As happygolucky says, she's simply providing for her family, a natural instinct.  Sounds as if she's not leaving them for too long.  I wouldn't worry if she's not leaving your land, and always comes back.  Just make sure the pups are warm enough while she's away.

How about some puppy pics.......... :eyelashes:

Yes, shes a good mummy but a bit of a worry, some puppy picks would be lovely, did she bring anything back. A nursing bitch, although I suspect they are becomming weaned now, will be ravenouse and eat loads, so the desire to hunt if she can would be much greater!! !!

It's lovely to hear of a chihuahua being  a dog instead of a handbag accessory.
The majority I meet have fluffy pink coats and glitzy collars. They don't know what their legs are for other than gripping to the bag they are carried in or to the neck they are dangling from.

She is naughty leaving her pups, I hope she brought you back a pressie to pay for the puppy sitting.  We need piccies now  :eyelashes:

Just shows they're all wolves inside  :innocent:

Love the image of her running over the top of the snow to go rabbitting - like happygolucky, I never thought a chihuahua would behave like that

One of your pups would certainly be allowed to be a real dog here - my Brittanys wouldn't allow anything else in the house(or the paddock! !  :roflanim:  It would probably help Rio (my favourite Ginge) to catch the rats and rabbits.  So tiny though, I'd worry about losing it if I forgot to mow the grass.  ;) :innocent: :roflanim:
