Just ben offered £35.00 each for 4 orphan lambs What do you all think? worth it or not? i've not done much to them yet like invested a lot of time or milk powder because they are not that old. Going to a good home for lawn mowers.
-
That sounds expensive to me, I've never paid more than £20 for an orphan.
-
I'd bite their hand off.
-
We got ours free last year at a week old and a friend got some from the same farm for £12 at nearly 3 weeks old
-
Don't forget to hand a sign round their necks saying "Remember I need much more care and maintenance than a lawn mower - I last longer than most too!"
-
I would love a couple of orphan lambs, but I wouldn't know what to pay either, if anyone has any available tayside/Angus could you pm me
-
I would snatch their hands off unless you wanted to keep em yourself.
-
I've just re-read your post... and would too bite their hand off! Doh... not had enough coffee yet this morning :-\
-
Some years they won't fetch a lot more than that in the store mart in the summer!
Bite their hands off.
Spare lambs for adopting onto ewes are still £10 each here - that's a day or two old, have had colostrum.
-
Ooh this is good then! we have never sold orphans before or bought them, in fact we try not to have them at all!!
Generally if i do bring any up, they go later as meat lambs or as boxed lamb, so someone wanting to buy some now is a bit new to me.
Personally i hate having them they are a pain in the bum, so i will as you say; bite their hand off.
Cheers

For £35 a piece I'd make sure I had a lot more orphans here. Thats a mad price to pay.
-
I've got one here and would gladly accept £35 for him! As stated above, take the money
-
35 quid?
Blimey.
And here was me thinking there was no way orphans would be making the £20 they made last year.
Pre-quoted prices still stand though, so don't panic, Colliewoman. :P
-
Goodness you make me feel bad now, i got all stoppy with my Hubby and said they're worth at least £40 not a penny less, so that's what he asked and he got beat down to £35!!! :roflanim: Neck of the Devil eh!
If you don't ask you don't get
-
Christ! If a store is worth £50......
-
They said trade is up this week Steve, we even had a dealer ring us up to see if we had anything heavy enough to go, but we didn't, nearly there another couple of weeks and we will have it's just Easter is early this year. They said Hoggets are on the up as well, i think trade will be good this week if you have anything
-
Funnily enough I am weighing lambs tomorrow..... ;D

:-* :-* :-* :-*
Mind you, if you get offered that I will not be at all offended if you sell them to someone else cos I aint paying that! Daft money IMO but £35 isn't much for a lifelong pet I suppose?

Nah - a deal is a deal as far as I'm concerned. I'm happy to have some presold instead of doing the running about trying to sell at lambing time.
-
Orphans were making anywhere between £25- £40 depending on size and breed at Sedgemoor mart this week. A friend of ours was watching them closely because he was going to buy some but didn't as he thought the price was silly!
-
The going rate at the mo is 25 pound thats 3 or 4 and some pens 6 so thats good huntley was uo last week 80 pound for last springs lambs 2012
-
To me at £35 to make money and remembering where you have Live stock you can have dead stock is a bit dear. The lamb would need to be of a good confimation breed to stand a chance of making a profit Beltex, texel etc. If it was a breed such as shetland you might be lucky to get your money back.
I think if you take the weight of the tup add the weight of the ewe (typical weight given on web sites such as NSA) divide by 2 gives the potential mature weight. Divide the Mature weight again by 2 and you get the weight for score of 3. Look on the ELBEX web site.
What I am trying to say there are a few other factors to take into consideration.

Neighbour bought a (thin) ewe with two lambs at foot on Monday for £65 at Chelford market.... Because she kept looking at him!.... and he got £2 luck money back from the vendor!
He always seems to buy "unloved" beasts but he cares for them very well although as he says, he'll never make a living from it
-
I would bight their hand off for that price!! Most farmers around here would gladly give them away for next to nothing, not much money in them after you calculate the cost of the milk and your time bringing the little blighters on!!
-
Orphan lambs were from £2 in Chelford on Monday..... up to £20 for well grown ones
