Tesco have now put up notices on the freezers saying they have listened!!!! and now their burgers are only from uk and Ireland.....
ISN'T IRELAND WHERE THE HORSEMEAT ORRIGINATED FROM ? .....DO THEY THINK WE CAN EVER TRUST THEM AGAIN? NAH!!!!
-
How can we suddenly trust any labelling? I heard on the radio of how a pub is actually selling horse meat burgers and doing very well!!
-
Trouble is.... the most of the general public will be 'bought back' by cheap meat - regardless of whats in it. There may be a few people that will support their local farm shop instead, but unfortunately that will probably be only a small percentage of the population.
Addition to post as Happygolucky posted whilst I was typing:
No offence to any other drinkers here, but the pub selling horse burgers is probably full of beer swilling 'manly types' being manly & showing that they will eat anything.
-
Sorry, am I missing something, wasn't tesco or any other of the supermarkets etc who put the horse in, it was 3rd party suppliers, IMO feel free to bash them for what they've done but not for what they haven't, suppose the only evidence known about it is in the daily mail and I guess tesco et al also aided and abetted in the supposed murder of princess Diana and put her in a burger as well.
I'd hate to hate what I feed my dogs in their dog food
The meat scandal, how I hate that word, was due to people making a fast buck in the supply chain, and it isn't a scandal, it's just meat with the wrong label, and I'm not interested in drugs in meat either, once again, this has been going on for ages but there isn't a big load of dead people because of it, it's just a 'let's have a scandals, there's nothing else to report so well make some news' most people don't even know pork comes from a pig.
I am in a bad mood today
I am sorry.
-
And don't start on mislabelling either,
Fish don't have fingers - I've checked, my umbongo was not, despite the ads made in the Congo, so I was not supporting the 3rd world poverty, my golden nuggets are not gold, speckled hen beer has no hen in it, the list is endless...
I give up, it's all the daily mails fault, and it's all (I'm sooo cross I can't think of the word) 'exaggeration' to sell papers to the unintelligent masses who can't have an informed opinion of their own
-
And I've got no cigarettes left...
-
:roflanim: :roflanim: Alister, that IS funny :sofa: at least one of us is having a laugh!!!
My brother reminded me horse meat was commonly on sale in markets and butchers, but not necessarily sold as horse meat...buy the way...where have all the mad cows gone?
-
;D ;D ;D ;D go alistair!!!

I agree with you to some extent but every retailer has the legal responsibility for what they sell. But more than that, it is the longstanding hammering of suppliers by the supermarkets to produce silk purses for sows ear rates that mean that it gets to a point where it isn't possible to deliver the product at that price WITHOUT adulteration or fraud. A steak pie for £1.50 cannot possibly be a steak pie for example.
So yes, I do blame them. They need to change the way they do business, work with British farmers and realise that the buck stops with them cos they are legally liable and they are the ones creaming off the profits.
-
There are 220.000 more people on the planet every day. No-one's making any more land. I think that they'd better start being fair to farmers a lot sooner than they'd planned for. I was once told (by an MP) that if the M25 stopped working supermarket shelves in London would start to empty in 20 minutes!
-
I think your missing my point, I'm fully aware of vicarious liability etc but that's not really what makes me mad, what exactly are you blaming 'them' for?
For the life of me I can't really see what the issue is. I am married to a vegan, however I eat meat, as she rightly says it doesn't really matter what animal it comes from it's just meat at that price, most of it probably mechanically recovered, what Gauls me is that this just isn't a scandal, it's not of any import, it's just a chance for the masses to be whipped up into yet another hysteria about something that they arn't willing to change, if they where properly bothered they'd stop eating meat (they don't need to, they won't die because of it) or shop somewhere else, but they don't do that either?
So at e end of the day, why blame tesco/ ASDA/ findus or whoever for this?, bad them for encouraging factory farmingkf chickens, lack of fish (with or without fingers) in the seas, thy only supply what the masses want to buy, if you don't buy it then they won't sell it, these guys are seriously savvy about what's on their shelves down to a local level, if you buy razor blades the chances are the tag on the box will tell them what you stop at in store etc
It ISN'T their fault, it's my fault, I buy the stuff, it's your fault, it's everyone's fault, but ask yourself this, what is it that we are all at fault for?
Being mindless morons in my opinion
I have cigarettes now, it is big hard and clever and I know that because I mindless, I will also grow up to be a cowboy
-
I don't like the fact that one meat product has been labeled and sold as another but .......
:sofa: :sofa: :sofa:
I am also of the opinion that if you choose to buy and eat anything labeled as 'meat powder' you can't then complain it wasn't finest steak.
If you want good meat, buy good meat. If it is expensive then buy a small amount and ENJOY it. Meat derivatives are cheap and will remain cheap because they are inconspicuous and can be hidden in anything.
Have some respect for your own bodies and feed it with quality fuel.

Um.
The supermarket labels were wrong before, are they trying to say they've managed to replace that entire continent-wide supply chain in this short space of time, before any prosecutions etc etc?
Nah...

Um.

Nah...
It wasn't the whole supply chain, it was a bit of it, so there's no reason why not, it's not as if Romanian frmers where dressing all their horses up as cows or anything because tesco and findus told hem to do it,
Why not trust tesco, do you honestly believe they KNEW that they where selling horse meat?, there's a pretty fundamental test of reasonableness to be applied here before everyone starts jumping on various bandwagons
All the big suppliers have done is doe their very expensive research, apologised for something that was not of their making and IMHO, implicated what te masses want so that they can continue to trade, like any business would
-
No, I think the supermarkets were scammed.
I already had issues with them for general supplier bullying, and them selling junk (but then people want to buy junk, ugh)...it's hard for me to feel sorry for them. Plus they're raking in the profits and I'm...not. :-\
I think someone did have to realise that a supply chain that convoluted is so vulnerable, but they were after cheap meat before anything else.
-
I have been to tesco just now and confronted the lady at customer services, she assured me, as I was being escorted out of the store by a rather large gentleman, that they did not know about the horse meat or the lack of fish in the sea but they where aware of the chicken issues, she also shouted that she would look into the issues regarding umbongo as i was 'leaving', but wasn't sure if they still carried it in store
-
well at least she was 'listening'
-
I see that if I sell something that's not what it says it is, then it IS my fault, like in any team, a worker messes up and its the boss or line managers fault, we need someone to blame, then of course the buyers may well have a budget to buy stuff so get brownie points for bargain deals, the buyers may or may not know, not every rep or buyer knows all about the farming process, then the food can go into the supermarket at a good price where Joe Bloggs like me, who just wants to feed their family and has no idea of the ins and outs of farming or growing stuff so, the supermarket with the cheaper value stuff sells more and then they can also sell on more of the more expensive stuff, I know I am rambling but honestly, I used to give very little tough to where my food came from or how it was produced, just wanted to spent my shopping budget and keep my family happy, so, we can only blame the supermarkets.., they now have the perfect excuse to sell the same food for much more money now with a new label saying "Beef" or "Pork"
-
I seem to have missed something. What's with Umbongo? Just googled it and all I can find is that it's a fruit drink.
-
Umbongo umbongo they make it in the Congo....
Sadly they don't
And it's not made by hippos either
-
Ok. I didn't believe the bit about the hippos but the Congo sounded feasible.
-
See how much influence adverts have on us, I remember that advert,, and them Bongo vans are good, they are small camper vans, bit like my old VW 's.........not sure Tesco has a car sales :-J
-
Alistair you have made me cry laughing. Thanks for that. I've also got pics in my head of horses with cow suits on. Fabulous!! :roflanim:
-

They actually were careful not to say that Um Bongo was made in the Congo, they said 'dey drink it in dee Congo' which means it might actually have been made in Inverplopton all along. I seem to remember the adverts graphics were similarly culturally enlightened as the lyrics :-oo
-
Did you remember to get you ciggies before being escorted from the building alistair?...... ;D
-
Here's your answer Lesley.

Well, for the avoidance of any doubt...
Way down deep in the middle of the Congo,
A hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango.
He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.
The rhino said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo"
Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the Congo.
The python picked the passion fruit, the marmoset the mandarin.
The parrot painted packets, that the whole caboodle landed in.
So when it comes to sun and fun and goodness in the jungle,
They all prefer the sunny funny one they call Um Bongo!
I think the former demonstrates that it was indeed all aledgidly made in the Congo, I thus rest my case m'lud.
And feisty, yes I did remember my ciggies, I am a little calmer now
-
:roflanim: Can you still buy that?
-
That is rather deceptive.
