Our friend lives in a small village that is one of the few that still has a bakers. The baker does not make much bread though as he finds it difficult to wake for his early shift. The village has forgotten the usual routine of the traditional bread collection at 07:00. I am not sure when the chap does sell bread but I am told that he is visited by the police every day at 10:00. They take him a bottle and share a Pastis. At noon the baker's mates arrive and they share a bottle of wine. The baker is at his most productive in the afternoon when he has bread for sale.
Seems like the local police ( never to be seen in the villages around here) go out of their way to support and continue the tradition of men having a morning wake up drink. :innocent:

I used to work in the town centre in a building that was on a corner, a great position for watching all the comings and goings. We got to know the local bobbies, and they used to pop in for coffee with us as we had a machine and got it for free! They would sometimes use our huge windows for surveillance and infact caught many a shoplifter. We got to know them so well, that when it was my birthday, a couple of them actually brought in a load of cream cakes to help me celebrate. They were lovely, and we all felt so safe knowing that if we ever had to dial 999, they would be there in a flash!

I don't think that there is much for our police to watch out for in these parts - save for the odd Englishman with a crossbow ( see othe posts). La Creuse has the lowest crime of all of France and basically no bugger has anthing to steal. If a holiday home is robbed they will send a helicopter to hunt down the gypsies. They believe all crime is comitted by them.
